(COMPLETED) - Census 1861 (Shettleston) look up please McLaughlin
« on: Friday 08 July 05 06:55 UTC (UK) »

Could somebody please do a census lookup for me.  Our State Library in Melbourne, Australia does not have complete census sets for most years (unfortunately).

McLaughlin household 1861 Shettleston, County Lanark

Head:  P?? McLaughlin
Wife:  Catherine McLaughlin (formerly Beattie nee Barclay)
Son:  James Beattie  (around 16 or 17 years in 1861)

I am trying to find info on James Beattie who was born in Ireland (1844/45??) and married Jemima Ford in Shettleston 8 October 1866 in St Pauls Roman Catholic Church Eastmuir (McLaughlin was signed as a witness - looks like P W McLaughlin).   I am hoping I may find out more info from a census as to any other siblings and what County he come from in Ireland.  His father was also James Beattie, but was already deceased in 1866.  I am assuming that his mother Catherine had already remarried McLaughlin and was in Scotland by 1861.

I have been using Scotlandspeople online searching for a lot of my research.  What a fabulous (addictive) site it is!  I am not having much luck at all with Irish records (library or online).

Many thanks

Not that I think there is a connection at this point, but I have a Jane McLaughlin or McLaughlan, b. 1844, who married John Cotterill in Glasgow in 1870.  I have been trying to find her parents, Michael McLaughlin and Jane Queen.  Any connection?

Re 1861 census for James Beattie

I could'nt find James in 1861 names index for Glasgow or Lanarkshire.
According to 1881 census he would have been about 20 in 1861

Thanks for trying Liz.

Ages seem to differ from document to document.  He was 21 on his marriage certificate (1866), which makes him around 16/17 in 1861.  I thought he was probably living with his mother, Catherine and stepfather in the McLaughlin household in 1861.

The search continues.

Hi Ninatoo

Thanks for your reply.  I don't think there is any connection at this stage.

Happy searching
