1930 census look-up New York
« on: Saturday 09 July 05 14:31 UTC (UK) »

Personal Information  Draft Card Image
Name:    Thomas Henry Collins
City:    Queens
County:    Queens
State:    New York
Birth Date:    23 Nov 1873
Race:    White
Roll:    1787170
Draft:    182

I am hoping that this information on the WW! draft card will lead me to the correct Thomas Collins. His date of birth is correct as his his wife's name.
The back of the card looks to be stamped as Local board for the city Niagara falls N Y

Thomas was born in England and his wife was called Elizabeth, also born in England.Thomas emigrated in 1898 and his wife in 1899.
In 1900 they lived in Calumet ,HoughtonCounty,Michigan with a daughter Ruth. In 1910 they lived in Rockland Twp,Ontonagon County,Michigan with their children Ruth,Harold(Arnold?) and Pearl.

Hi Maryanne,  think I worked on this before ------

I looked at the WW1 Reg Card --  in addition to the Niagara Falls NY stamp it also has stamp and mention of Ontario, Canada?  And tho hard to read, his employer may be a Canadian Mining company?

So maybe in 1920 and 1930 he could be in Canada?

Have you already checked that out?   However, guess there is no Canadian Census data to confirm??  1911 is due for release in August, I heard.

I searched for him in 1920 and 1930 in MI and NY --  he's not coming up.

Any idea if he served/survived WW1?

Thanks and Yes kathy, you have worked on this one before.

I only came across the draft card a couple of days ago and was hoping that it would lead me to the family.
His employer on the card is Charles Watson ,mining corporation of Canada. I can't read the address which Elizabeth had given.
It does mentioned Ontario.
Why would there be a NY address but a mention of Canada?

I have no idea whether he served or survived WW1.

Will the Canadian census be 1911 or 1930?

Hi Maryanne,

Niagara Falls straddles the border between US and Canada --  maybe living on one side, working on the other??  Seems like if you were registering for the draft you'd have to committ?  Maybe somebody on Armed Forces board or Canadian Board can answer.

Did you eliminate this Thomas & Elizabeth before because you know the childrens names?

1920 Marquette, Negaunee Co., Michigan, Main Street
Thomas H Collins 48 b. Eng  F/M: Eng.  Immig. 1900  Miner @ Iron Ore Mine
Wife Elizabeth 48   b. Eng  F/M: Eng.  immi. 1900
Both naturalized in 1905.
Glenora     16 b. MI
Hendell G. 14 b. MI
William M. 11 b. MI

Also,  Thomas Collins 56 b. in Eng.  Laborer  Citizenship/Natl. Unknown   Patient @ House of Calvary on McCombs Road, Bronx, NY  in 1930

House of Calvary is a cancer hospice.  Est. 1899.  Relocated to McCombs road in 1915.  Run by the Archdiocese of New York.

Don't understand your question about comparing the US/Canadian Census formats?  I don't know what the format of 1911 will be.

The Thomas and Elizabeth Collin's family I have been tracing had 3 children by 1910 . Ruth aged  9,Harold 7 and Pearl 7 months.  All born in Michigan.

They were naturalised in 1910 .
3 SEPT 1910 COLLINS, THOMAS HENRY BORN 23 NOV 1874 REDRUTH, CORN
AND WIFE ELIZABETH BORN MARAZION, CORN, MIGRATED FROM
SOUTHAMPTON, ENG 10 SEPT 1896 ON SHIP- ST LOUIS- ARRIVING
NEW YORK CITY. ALL CHILDREN BORN IN UNITED STATES.

As you can see below the same person has a different birth year.

Calumet Hecla Cornish Employees
COLLINS  Thomas  H.  23 Nov 1873  Redruth, Cornwall  1893 2nd time Sept 1898  Wife in Marazion, Cornwall and came to Calumet, Michigan Aug 1899  Married .
The above is the correct Thomas Henry Collins .

If the Thomas on the WW! draft is the correct one I will have to trace him in Canada as the address on the WW1 draft was North Cobalt, Ontario, Canada.

It is a pity that the Canadian census will only be up to 1911 in August

Maryanne,  have you googled for North Cobalt Ontario history and Genealogy??  Seems to be several sites as well as a Mining Museum there.

Here's one ---

www.ghosttownpix.com/ontario/towns/argentite.shtml

Canadian Parliment just this week passed the bill allowing census to be published 92 years after.  Therefore 1911 which is already scanned in will be ready to go in Aug.

Long wait for 1921! which I guess was taken/exists in Canada??  Hopefully not fated like US 1890!!

Good Luck!
