Ports of Donegal
« on: Monday 04 June 07 06:21 BST (UK) »

I was wondering if a person lived in Donegal what ports would be available ( or most inconvenient )to leave from to travel to Scotland in 1884 on wards.

I'm trying to trace my grandfathers steps to Scotland.
All I know is that he married in Strarhmigco (miglo) Scotland in 1897. He later immigrated to New Zealand. What sites could I go to, to find passenger lists for both countries. I have no details on ships names or year of travel or which county or port that he and his wife left from.   I have tried searching New Zealand records for port of entry lists to no avail.

I would appreciate it if someone could help me out with details

Many thanx

Ps will post on Scots board as well.

Many people from Donegal would have left from Londonderry city. Ireland was part of Britain, like Scotland, in 1800s and it is doubtful that any passenger lists between the two countries would have been kept.

Ok I'll try again. I know I posted a reply but it doesn't seem to have come up

Thank you Aghadowey

For replying. You've probably saved me many an hour of frustration. Even knowing that my GD may have left from Londonerry may be enough of a piece to fit the puzzle.

I appreciate you extending your knowledge to help me out

Many Thanks

Hiya Lil,

People sailed from ports in Co. Donegal as well as from Derry. I imagine it would have depended whereabouts in the county they lived. Emigration ships sailed from Killybegs amongst other ports in the county.

Hi Christopher

Thank you for reply.

I know that two of my Montgomery's traveled to Scotland first before migrating to New Zealand, but the others I am sure left form Ireland to migrate to the USA and Australia. The Montgomery's seemed to have moved around in the Co. Donegal area, as at the time I asked this question I had but one person for this family and have since found 13 more siblings, some I have birth details for in separate locations  throughout Donegal. So my best bet, would then be, to find their residence at the times of departure. Thank you for this information, which is very helpful Smiley

Regards
