Marriage Certificate Signatures
« on: Sunday 10 July 05 03:23 UTC (UK) »

I have my grandparents marriage certificate ... Marriage solemnized at The Wesleyan Chapel, Chynhale in the District of Helston in the County of Cornwall the 10th April 1920.

I am a bit confused as the writing ..... including all the signatures looks the same. The certificates I have purchased in Australia are photocopies of the actual parish transcript and shows each persons signature.

Is there a way to check the actual parish record?
I believe there is an error in the names of the witnessess .... and if the whole certificate is a transcription of the actual record.... well I would love to be sure.

Any ideas?
Thanks
Jane

Hi Jane

If I remember correctly, when I married in 1972 we did not sign the marriage certificate, only the Register of Marriage. The certificate was prepared by the vicar.

The best idea would be to obtain a copy of the register, it may well be in the county archives but could still be held by the chapel

Hope this is of use

Happy hunting

Hi Jane,

If you got the certificate from the GRO it is a transcription, not an original.  The only place where you will actually find the various participants' signatures is in the original marriage register.  Since this is a Methodist chapel in your example, I am not sure where the original would be.  I suggest that you ask Cornwall Records Office:

Hi,

Some RO's sometimes photocopy an entry for you, some always rewrite them. I have never found the real reason why this happens but it's always worth asking for a photocopy - sometimes you will get lucky. If you don't ask you don't get!
