O'Neill -emigrant to USA from Ireland
« on: Wednesday 21 July 04 10:12 BST (UK) »

Searching for James O'Neill born Barna? Galway Ireland circa 1850.
He was son of James & Mary O'Neill (nee Walker)
James jnr had 3 siblings- Ellen b. 1845,Alice Ellen b 1854 & Katherine b. 1844.
All the family emigrated to Australia in 1870 except James snr and James jnr. It's possible snr died in Ireland prior to 1870 but young James O'Neill's name has been deleted from final departure list to Australia on the "Strathmore"

Allowing for the various splellings of O'Neill ie O'Neil.O'Neille etc
Any hints ?

Hi Kimberley
Young James may have decided to stay in Ireland.
There are so many varients of the surname, that it would be nigh on impossible to search the US census.
I wish I could assist. Cry

There were a lot of O'Neill's in Franklin County New York after 1850.  One of my cousins long ago (m) an O'neill there.  Those census can be found at the New York Genweb site and at Rootsweb.  Look in towns of Chateaugay, Burke, Belmont, Malone.  Also a lot of Dwyers and Leary's there. Prob. from O'Dwyer and O'Leary as I did see some spelled w/the O'
