Skeletons in cupboards
« on: Wednesday 21 July 04 12:26 UTC (UK) »

Hi all
thought I would post this and see if anyone can help me solve this its a bit longwindered but hear goes.15 years ago when I started this and asking quetions of the few people still alive about my motheres father I was told to leave well alone and they put up a wall of silence  but never minde I have carried on and last week I tracked my grandfathers birth cert down
John Thomas rafferty b 6 May 1885
father James mother Sarah formaly Shaw
I have found the family on the 1891 census for Newcastle but no John who would of been age 6
the census shows James as 56 and Sarah 54 a bit old to have a 6 year old  they also have 3 older children a daughter age 23 and 2 sons age 20 and 15 this is the question could my granfather be the son of Ellen age 23  if so how could James and Sarah register John as theres and where is John when the census was done , he died in 1950 at the age of 65
thanks
audrey

Audrey,

You may well be right.  Our ancestors were incredible fibbers - no way would the child who appears on 1851 census aged either 10 weeks or 10 months as the son of my 3x gt grannie (can't make out if it is w or m) be the child of a man who died 7 years previously!

I've just looked up the 1881 Census and found a James & Sarah Rafferty in Benwell in Newcastle with a daughter Ellen, plus Francis, Hannah, James & Joseph - is this them?  Trouble is the ages look wrong for James & Sarah (40 and 30).  Perhaps John was with his grandparents or an uncle or aunt.  Don't give up - keep looking.

I saw the 1881 census too I am preety sure its the same family but I thought the ages were wrong as you can see Ellens age is 16  and Sarah the mother only 30 there is also a Joseph there age 1 he is not on the 1891 either thanks
