Uploading to website

Hi everyone I have created my website using GEDMILL. I have my webspace at Rootschat. I have downloaded an FTP Program from CORE FTP.
When I try to connect to my site (http://stephenmiller.rootschat.net) I get an error message
"an existing connection was forcibly closed by remote host"
I haven't a clue what I am doing wrong
I do not know whether I may have my username/password wrong I have emailed Rootschat about this but as yet no reply.
Could someone please help and I would appreciate the help in plain English please because the next time I read any more jargon I will be doing an impression of Led Zeppellin except it will be my computer landing on the pavement and not the TV

Might be worth trying another ftp package - I used Coffecup - http://www.coffeecup.com/ and it seemed OK.

Hi Steve,

Your website is there - just had a look - so think it must be problems with the properties in your FTP Server.

Your "User ID" and "Account" should be your site - then password as you requested.

Just had a look at mine - and that seems all the details required.
Have another go - sometimes these things clear afterwards.

1 I have tried Coffee Cup and all it does is try to connect for an hour and then I cancel it after getting very fed up

2 I am aware my site is there but I wonder if I am trying a wrong username and password I emailed rootschat for a reminder on Sunday but as yet no reply

still getting the same error message
does anyone know how to contact someone from the rootschat site maybe they can tell me what I am doing wrong

Sorry to see you are having problems. As you can see from the replies, we would all love to help, but this looks like something that the Webspace Administrator will have to tackle (that's Trystan)

I've sent him a PM just in case he misses this topic, but I don't know when he will be on-line again.

There's no problem there.

I've just logged in using FTP, and had a little look around.

Could you try another FTP program perhaps?

The 'host' and the 'account' or 'username' is the same, and they both include the ".rootschat.net" bit at the end of them.

So, if your webspace name was 'counter' for example, then you would use:

host: counter.rootschat.net
user: counter.rootschat.net
password: whateveryourpasswordis

You don't put 'ftp' infront of the 'host' either.

Fingers crossed, let's hope that helps.

thanks Trystan I'll give it a try tomorrow but I think I have already tried what you suggest. However I have tried that many things I can't remember them all.
I still think I may have my username and password wrong because I used different ones for this site and the webspace.
If it doesn't work tomorrow then I will leave it as it has taken up 5 days already and I have other things to do.

Hi Trystan just done a quick try and still getting same error message
You say try another FTP : this is 2nd one I have tried and still not working
is there a way of checking if I have correct username and password?

Hi Trystan thank you I have received the username and Password the problem is now I know I have been using the correct ones and that is on both FTP programs I have tried if it doesn't work tonight then I will forget about the whole idea
