Commercial websites?
« on: Sunday 10 July 05 22:43 BST (UK) »

I'd thought that the provision of free webspace here was so that we could put our family history online to share freely with other people.  I hadn't realised that people could use it to offer a paid service.  Yet I've just clicked on someone's website which does just that.  Surely if you want to offer such a charged-for service you should pay for your won website.

The site and free web space should be entirely free and not for commercial use  get Trystan to investigate

Yes, you're both right in the sense that we offer free webspace to encourage people to set up their own family history or local history webspace.

If a website is in connection to family history or local history we do allow people to put up "commerical" sites on a case-by-case basis.

We are totally open however to family history societies in setting up their sites on RootsChat (for free, with no popups) and they can freely sell things connected with their family history society on there.
