What happens when the father dies.
« on: Thursday 14 July 05 06:37 BST (UK) »

Can anyone give me any insight to what happens when the  father dies, The family i am researching Warrick of Dorset are  on the 1851 census.
Elizabeth 29 Widow
Charles 6
Richard 4
Phillip 1
The last child Phillip warrick was born in 1850 and the father Henry Warrick died in 1850.
Phillip warrick married Sarah anne Miller in  Wimbourne dorset in 1873 however i have been unable to find any census records on this family after 1851. regards Tracey

I know that Charles and Richard are under the spelling of Warwick. And that Richard married in fordingbridge.

Phillip and Sarah came to South australia from London in 1876.
with 2 children Henry aged 3 and Ellen aged 1
I also have not been able to find these childrens births.

Hi Tracey

Any of a number of things may have happened...

Elizabeth may have re-married, in which case you may find the children still with her in 1861, but under a new surname.  They may or may not be described as son or daughters in law.  I have one ancestor whose father died when he was 4 and who appeared on the next census under a new name but subsequently re-adopted his own surname when he reached 18.

The family may have become dispersed by the time of the 1861 census - all working in different jobs:  I have one family where they were all in service or working as farm servants.

The children may be living with relatives.

Have you found Elizabeth in 1861 - she will offer a clue.

cheers

Paul

Thank you,
Sorry to Casalguidi, I had read your posts before and with all the research that I had undertaken had forgotton to take these into my research.
I was to focused on tracking her as a Warrick.

Hi Tracey

I'm so pleased that you managed to make some progress with the earlier years and that the others turned out to be the correct family Smiley

Best wishes

Thank you again for your help.
Could you please tell me from the 1871 census.
Would the Phillipe Elliott aged 20 be Phillip Warrick born in 1850.
Why would his name have changed when richard and Charles and Phillip were still down as Warick/warrick in 1861.
Regards Tracey.
P.S. as he married as Phillip Warrick

Hi Tracey

Yes, Phillip WARWICK and Phillip ELLIOTT are one and the same person - just the whole family were sometimes listed as ELLIOTT rather than their true surnames.

Best wishes

Keeping us on our toes, changing of names

Hi,
Just when your ready to throw in the towel, a tiny lead could take you to more information and that keeps you motivated.
The spelling of a name even by one letter keeps me frustrated.
However, thanks to Rootschat, I couldn,t have gotten this far without it.
