Bernie,

I wonder if Sir Robert Rollo Gillespie (1766 - 1814) is the guy about whom you require more information Sir Robert was born in a large house on the square in Comber, Co. Down where his statue now stands. He was also known as "Rollicking Rollo."

Sue,

I hope you will not be upset at a comment I feel I must make. If a poster does not post adequate information it does no harm to drop them a PM, or even post a message on the board, asking if they have any more information than that already posted. I hope that some newcomers to the boards will also read this comment. Taking such an action tends to establish a better working relationship with the person who opened the topic and assures them that you are taking a genuine interest in their query rather than making wild guesses. Genealogy should involve step by step research rather than guesswork.

Best Wishes, Christopher

The Robert Rollo Gillespie in that weblink is my great grandfather.
my grandad, dad and brother have the same name.  I've always been told i'm a descendant of the Comber Robert Rollo, but i'm not convinced.

My father knows loads about this stuff, let me know and i can give you his email address.  My mum knew a lot about it too and i would ask her about it but she passed away this year so that's no longer possible.

Hope that is helpful in some way. Smiley

Sorry this isn't of much use in your search - there's an old joke around County Down that if you're stopped by the police you give your name as "Robert Gillespie, The Square, Comber"!  Wink

Morover there's one unknown fact, well almost, that Sir Robert Rollo Gillespie was the godfather of Robert Rollo Light, an old friend of his father's from his Javanese days

There was an interesting article about the first Major-General Gillespie in the September 1990 issue of Family Tree magazine which mentions three sons - Robert, George and one unnamed, plus a daughter Selina.

My great-grandmother Margaret Gillespie (1871-1946)was the daughter of Major Thomas Gillespie. Royal Engineers, and we have always been told he was a descendant of the Major-General, but haven't been able to confirm this yet.

Thanks Rowlie.

That is the intention of Rootschat, people sharing information with each other.

Do you know if the General is mentioned in the current edition of "A Dictionary of Irish Biography?" There is no mention of him in the one I have borrowed from the library. It is the third edition published in 1998.

All the Best,

Chris

Seems like I could be in dire trouble if I got stopped  in County Down then ! Ido go from time to time, so there is always the risk .
