My GGG Grandfather William Beaton was born in Worthen approx 1795. He married Sarah Owen who was born in Trefeglwys, Montgomeryshire and their children were Daniel, Edward, William, Thomas, Elizabeth and Lewis.
I have them in the Montgomeryshire census from 1851 onwards, and I am now trying to find out more information on William.
Anyone else researching the Beaton name from Worthen?

Since posting this, I have discovered that William's name was actually BETTON. I have seen his baptism, and also his marriage to Sarah. Both clearly show BETTON as the surname.

Hello Pete
I feel awful ..........I should have explained more in my post, that I have been in touch with other Betton researchers, and now know that Danielis & Annae Betton were my 6 x Great Grandparents!!!!! An awful lot of work has been done on the Shropshire Betton's and one researcher is just in the process of trying to prove that they are connected to the Betton's of Great Berwick
I do have a lot of the baptisms contained in your list, however, there are others which will be worth looking into.
The marriage that you found for Daniel and Elizabeth is one of mine......they are my 4 x Great Grandparents.
My Betton line moved from Worthen to Llanidloes, Montgomeryshire. So I have spent many hours trawling through all the census.......they had such huge families, and with the constant repeated christian names it's been a real challenge. The name did get changed to BEATON somewhere along the time.....no doubt an error on a certificate.......and there are still distant cousins in Llanidloes today who are Beaton.
Thanks for the look up, much appreciated.
Jan

Greetings all.
I too am a descendant of the Bettons of Worthen/Montgomeryshire.
Via Elizabeth and Phillip (lead miner) see 1841 census Worthen - Shropshire and 1851 census Upper and Nether Heath Montgomeryshire. Although they crossed the boarder making a different national census to them it was only a few miles down the road.
My descendants through the generations left Worthen - no doubt following the Shropshire Union canal to Chester, got invovled in steam engines, thence to Cumberland (steam engine driver and agricultural labourer), thence to Northumberland and coal mining/joinery.
I see that you have a Lewis in the family listed as one of their children.
For us 'Louis' is still a family name. I also know that they have transposed it at will to Lewis in some records. I have always woundered where it originated, my great uncle was called Louis in 1881 and it seemed to appear from nowhere when the rest of the family were all called after previous family members. Like the other post I find that their naming conventions were all very clanish. Its nice to see that Louis/Lewis as a name goes back a further generation.

Welcome to Rootschat ThePastIsMyself Great username, by the way
It's great to hear from another Betton Researcher, I have been in contact with several, including a friend of mine who I've known for many years and didn't realise that we were very distantly related!!!
I'm still in the process of going through the census returns searching for all my Beaton/Betton families. I have found that the name "Lewis" appears many many times, as does Daniel, Edward, Thomas, William, Elizabeth and Ann.
Via Elizabeth and Phillip (lead miner) How are your Elizabeth and Phillip related to my lot?
