1891 Inverness Scotland
« on: Friday 23 July 04 04:03 UTC (UK) »

Looking for an Alexander FRASER in 1891 Inverness. I know we have 101 Alexander Frasers! and I dont have much!

Alexander FRASER born approx.1863 Inverness.

In 1893 he is a Policeman at Scotland Yard in London, I believe he transferred from Inverness to London as a Policeman?? and haven't been able to locate him in London prior to 1893, when he married a Catherine Mcculloch, also from Inverness.

No idea on parents, has a brother Donlad who is in England in 1891, so not much help.

Thank you...ele.

I have checked the records of the Inverness-shire Constabulary - only one Alexander Fraser listed, and he did NOT transfer to or from the Metropolitan Police. The Royal Burgh of Inverness also had a police force (from 1847-1968) but unfortunately records have not survived for the era you mention.

Chances are however that he could have been in the Burgh Police and then transferred to London (no actual transfers in those days - you had to leave one force and then join another).

Alternatively he may have been unable to obtain a post locally as there were few vacancies in ANY Highland police force due to relatively small numbers. As a result, rather than see a good recruit be lost, Chief officers would frequently recommend them to "south country" forces, and there was always the potential to "transfer" back home when fully trained whenever a vacancy arose.

Sorry I cannot be of any more help than that.

Have you made enquiries with Metropolitan Police? worth reading:-
