Hi again
went to the Laterday Saint church today and looked on their computer as they subscribe to ancestry.com. Plugged in Nicholas Swanston and she came up right away as being born in Galashiels, Selkirk on May 25, 1843. Her father John Swanston also shows up as being born 8 May 1808 in the Galashiels region of Selkirk. His parents are Andrew and Isabel Swanston. Her maiden name is Beck. She often went by Betty Beck and is from the Dumfries area. Would you be able to check the 1841 census for Andrew and Isabel Swanston in the Galashiels region of Selkirk and if John wasn't married yet he would show up in their household as a young man. I am hoping that possible brothers may be Andrew, George and Walter. These are the other families that lived in the same area and George and Walter list their father as Andrew on their respective marriages.
Thanks for your time
Susan

Hi, I haven't got the 1841 census for Galashiels, its just for Selkirk. If you type in 'Graham and Emma Maxwell' into a search engine you will find that they have actually transcribed the 1841 census for Galashiels and other area's in the Borders of Scotland, and it also gives a list of surnames in each area. Thats were i get them from. Sorry i couldn't help further. Dawn

Hi Isobel, I've had a look and there are a few William Patersons on the census but none of them are married to a Janet Paterson. I checked the 1841 for Selkirk and the 1851 for Selkirk and Galashiels.

Hi Dawn, Can you check out this family in the 1841 and 1851 census for Ettrick please? James Little, born 1804 Hutton,Dumfriesshire, wife Mary Laidlaw, born 1805? Hawick. He was a shepherd on a farm called Chapelhope and I believe he lived in a cottage called Kercleuch in the Yarrow valley for about 40 years from around 1840.It would be helpful to know who was in the house at the time of the censuses. Also his father,Matthew Little for the 1841 census-a bit of a longshot as he was born 1767-he was alive in a house called Glenkerry in Ettrick(about 3 miles south of Ettrick village )in 1827.Also a shepherd and born in Hutton. Many thanks, Oyinda

Thanks for your help. Unfortunately I don't think they are the ones I am looking for. James McGregor was a cabinet maker, who applied for assisted passage to Australia in the 1840s.I can't find out which ship they came on, or from which port they left Scotland.
James and Margaret[ nee Peacock] were married at Hawich, in the parish of Selkirk, on 26th nov. 1830.
Any assistance would be appreciated.
Thanks Linet
