Severe Weather Payment 1776 for Ninfield, East Sussex

This was found between the Baptisms ending 1997 and Burials commencing 1747 - ESRO Ref: 430/1/1, Microfilm XA 30/111.

NINFIELD January 15th 1776

"During the severity of the present weather when no work can be done abroad, the Earl of Ashburnham made a payment of 5 guineas to the poor of the parish.
May the affluent in their several stations imitate so noble an example
The above sum with the appropriation of the Church Wardens was distributed as under:

This looks as though it is virtually a census of all inhabitants of Ninfield in East Sussex during the winter of 1776 - I wonder what they did with that extra money, and if it kept some of them from being permanent residents in the local Churchyard
