I'm looking for Gallet or Gallett in Hereford in 1841, in particular:
Barnaby, died 1843 Hereford his wife Ann (Taylor) they married 13 Nov 1833 at Lydney, Gloucester daughter Elizabeth christened 14.June 1835 at St Peter, Hereford
This is the only info I have, all from the IGI index
Thanks
Nick

Hello Nick,
I've had to do a bit of detective work on this one. I've found Barnaby in 1841, but no Ann or Elizabeth with him I'm afraid -
1841
Pockin Lane, St. Peters, Hereford
Barnaby Gallett 44 Innkeeper born in county - yes Elizabeth Lister 45 Independent no John Whitney 24 M.S. yes Elizabeth Maklin 28 F.S. yes
(HO107/ 433/ 7/ ?/ p34)
Have checked the whole of St. Peters and there are no other Gallet's at all. I have a name index to the 1851 census so ran a check on the name Gallett (in the hope that it may reveal where Ann and Elizabeth are in 1841). There were 2 results -
1851
Brook House, Tarrington
Elizabeth Gallett 76 Head Wid Retired Farmer Worcestershire, Tallerby? Hannah Nott 64 Visitor Wid '' ''
(HO107/ 1975/ 345/ p10)
Lays, Tarrington
John Taylor 59 Head Mar Farming Bailiff Tarrington, Herefordshire Mary Taylor 65 Wife Mar Ashperton '' John Taylor 16 Nephew Un '' '' Ann Gallett 58 Visitor Wid Annuitant Tarrington '' Ann Spencer 17 Serv Un Dairy Maid '' '' Elizth Mercer 14 Serv Un House Serv '' '' Thomas Davis 24 Serv Un Waggoner Mordiford '' John Phillips 15 Serv Un Waggoners boy Worcester Charles Adams 13 Serv Un '' '' Tarrington, Herefordshire
(HO107/ 1975/ 346/ p13)
Working backwards I checked to see if the Ann Gallett listed above was with the same family in 1841, they are still there, but she is not. Elizabeth Gallett is also still there (with husband), I'll list this as it is a good probability they may be Barnaby's parents.
1841
Brook House, Tarrington
John Gallett 50 Farmer born in county - yes Elizabeth Gallett 60 yes
(HO107/ 425/ 13/ 7/ p7)
As there is no index for Herefordshire in 1841 (yet!!) I can't identify where Ann & Elizabeth might be, but if I come across them in the future I'll let you know.
All the best Sue

Dear Sue
Thanks very much for this. It's given me plenty to think about, although no definite answers! John & Elizabeth of Brook House probably weren't old enough to be Barnaby's parents? However, Ann, visiting the Taylor family at Lays Farm in 1851 could be Barnaby's widow Ann (nee Taylor).
I would like to find out where Ann and Elizabeth were in 1841, though!
There were Galletts at Tarrington from the mid-1500's, and I have plenty of loose ends to follow-up; anything further will be much appreciated.
Thanks again for your help
regards
Nick

Hi Alli
Thanks very much for this - every little bit helps! It doesn't help that it's very easy for Gallet/t to be mis-transcribed, it's often difficult to distinguish between 'a' and 'u' on the census so they are frequently mixed up, especially with 'Gullett'. I'll keep plugging away...
Kind regards
Nick
