ARTHUR of Hayle
« on: Sunday 17 July 05 15:18 BST (UK) »

We have found a family of Arthur on 1841 Census for Hayle.
John Arthur  35  Mason
Harriet Arthur 30
Mary (Cool, John (7); Edward (5); william (3)

We believe there is connection  but can't find the thread.

Going backwards in the family tree - Thomas Sydney (Sidney?) Arthur Born circa 1900 (birth place unknown)- Married an Elizabeth Thompson (who was born Liverpool 1904).
Thomas was the son of Sydney(Sidney?) Alexander Arthur - born circa 1870 - 1880 - possibly Cornwall.

We believe that he may have emigrated to or returned from Australia (maybe he was a convict?)
Any help at all would be appreciated!
Thanks
Glenys Arthur

Is there a particular reason why you think this family are connected to your Sydney Alexander Arthur and Thomas Sydney Arthur?  Is your information about Thomas and Sydney from Thomas' marriage certificate? (And if so, does it give Sydney A. Arthur's occupation?  That could be a key to identifying him.)

Sorry to have been so long in getting back to you!  So far, we know Thomas Sydney Arthur born 1892 - Brisbane Australia.  Was a Merchant Seaman.  Discharge papers give him working for Lamport and Holt when he died of peritonitis in 1936.

Thomas Arthur married Elizabeth Thompson (b. 1904 - Liverpool)

We know Thomas Arthur had a sister, Irene McQuade (nee Arthur?) who was also known as "Queenie" .  She lived in Dandenong Mountains, Victoria, Oz.  Her family had a hotel in Melbourne.

We know absolutely nothing to date about Thomas Arthur's mother but know his father was Sidney Alexander Arthur.

My family is Cornish (Hosking from Hayle) and we know there were a family of Arthur's living in Hayle on the 1841 Census.  The "Arthur" side of the family believe Sydney Alexander may have been a mariner or convict  who emigrated to Oz (or stayed after his sentence!)

May be barking up the wrong koolabar tree......

Some amendments to that last posting - Thomas Sydney Arthur lace of birth unknown.  Seamans' papers give varying locations for birth - Brisbane, Victoria, and Blackpool...... No trace of his birth in Oz but there is a Thomas S.A born Halifax in the same year.

Likewise, no sign of any Sydney Alexandra Arthur - probably because I had been given duff info and the name was Alexander Thomas (?) Arthur.  Again, not a trace of him except for an Alexander Thompson Arthur born Stepney (!) 1843.  However, we do know that Alexander was another mariner - there are photos etc., of him - and we believe there is a cornish Connection with his father - again probably mariner.  Also, the Arthur family of Hayle disappear after the 1841 census - have been unable to find them on the 1851.
