Dunbar, Thomas William Edinburgh 1877

Hi there,
My great grandfather was Dunbar, Thomas William was born in Edinburgh in 1877. Married Helen Hunter also from Scotland, came to Canada, served in ww1 and passed in Manitoba Feb 24 1948. I have no information on siblings or parents and have no idea where to start. I was hoping with this amount of information I would be able to find something somewhere, but he seems to be a bit of a ghost. I am very new to this journey and if anyone can point me in the right direction, it would be greatly appreciated.

Try 1876 on www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk for his birth register entry in Kirknewton and East Calder, - a wee bit outside Edinburgh, but no that far, ken ?!.
