1861 Census - William Wallace
« on: Tuesday 19 July 05 12:03 UTC (UK) »

William would have been about 10, his parents were Hugh  and Mary .  I believe that they would have been living most likely in Blackfriars based on the location of the Williams marriage in 1875.

Have been unable to find out more details which may help me go back and was hoping someone might be able to find them in the census

Hi, I've checked out the names index for Glasgow (1861)
Searched all Williams between the ages of 8 to 13.
There was none with a father Hugh.
There was only one with a mother Mary (no father listed)
He was aged 13 born Kircudbright, also had brothers named John. Robert and Thomas.
Not much there, sorry.

The 1851 Index for Lanarkshire County has 1 William Wallace age 3 months his mother is Mary but the father is given as William ... both parents are listed as born in Ireland. Young william is listed as born in Old Monkland in Lanarkshire.

Thank you.

From the marriage register it states that his father was Hugh Wallace. This may have been a middle name but he did name his Son as Hugh and it seemed to be the tradition to name at least one child after the parents
