St Peter's Church, Drogheda
« on: Tuesday 19 July 05 21:23 UTC (UK) »

Hello,

Could anyone assist me with a marriage lookup at St Peter's Church (the one with Oliver Plunkett's head) in Drogheda?

Thanks,
Chris Allonby.

Seasons Greetings Chris,

This may be of assistance to you. http://drogheda.armagh.anglican.org/genealogy/genealogy.htm
The information you require should be available if someone does a search at The Representative Church Body Library in Dublin http://www.ireland.anglican.org/library

Best Wishes, Christopher

Hello Christopher,

Thanks for that information, but do the records noted on the website relate to the catholic chruch of St Peters in Drogheda, or a Church of Ireland establishment of the same name? I'm interested in the catholic records.

Thanks,
Chris.

Chris,

Sorry, I posted information about the Church of Ireland St Peters in Drogheda.
You made no mention of the name or date of the couple in whom you are interested. It would help if you, and everyone who posts a similar question, would give all relevant information when posting a message. The searchers on these boards have more than enough to do without acting like Spanish Inquisitors drawing answers from people. www.allaboutirish.com/library/people/plunkett.htm

This is the church where your couple married. http://www.armagharchdiocese.org/html/Parish_Directory21.htm

Hello Christopher,

I'm interested in one marriage that I know took place a the church, and another one that might have taken place.

Firrstly, the marriage of Peter Burns to Mary Murray in Q2 1890. I believe this marriage definitely happened at St Peters.

Peter Burns was born in Liverpool, so why was he in Drogheda when he got married? Possibly because his father, who emigrated from Ireland to England some time in the 1840s/1850s, came from that town. So it's the possible marriage of his father, Patrick Burns, that I would like to check.

Patrick Burns married Mary Carroll, but there is no record of a marriage in England, so I'm wondering if they married in Drogheda. Patrick was born in about 1842, and Mary in about 1841.

Any help you can give would be gratefully received.

Regards,
Chris.

ChrisAllonby:

You could check the film from LDS.
 St Peter's, Drogheda 1744-1804 0926036
 St Peter's, Drogheda  1815-1880 0926037

These are the RC records.

Usually, the groom would marry at the church of the bride. As to why he was in Ireland, could he have been in the Army?

Pat,

Your suggestion about Peter Burns, born in Liverpool, being in the army is a good one. I wonder if he could possibly have been a merchant seaman. There was a lot of trade between the busy port of Liverpool and Ireland.

All the best, Chris

Thanks for the information , and the thought about the army. I hadn't considered this, but I cannot recall my grandfather (son of Peter Burns) ever mentioning his father being in the army. He was a plasterer, who served his time as an apprentice in his father's business. Although born in Liverpool, he spent most of his life in Ulverston, Lancs and is recorded on every census from 1871 to 1901, either as a scholar or a plasterer.

Do you have an address or other contact info for LDS. Presumably you can order the microfilms direct from them?

Regards,
Chris.

No, it's definitely Drogheda. I have other evidence to that effect. Peter Burns left Liverpool with his family at an early age according to the census returns.

I didn't realise that the Mormon church had centres around Britain with a set of such microfilms. Just to confirm, if I visit one of their centres (probably York) would I be able to access details of marriages in St Peter's, Drogheda, for the period in question?

Thanks,
Chris.

Annie,  Cool

Oliver Plunkett, to the best of my knowledge was quite normal.
He had only one head. Does St Peter's Church in Liverpool
also have a head belonging to this guy? I find this fascinating.
I wonder why this fact has been omitted from history books.

Chris Allonby:
I don't know what your local center (oops "centre") might have on hand but you can order microfilm through them for viewing there. The cost is minimal.

Good luck. You should enjoy your visit to the centre.

Pat

Chris:
Interesting observation about the good bishop. We used to hear that after he was beheaded, the head was kicked around by Cromwell's men.
