1851 Census Lookup please - Grants/Rosses/Urquhardts in Alves
« on: Thursday 21 July 05 10:10 UTC (UK) »

I'm not sure if anyone has access to the 1851 Census for Alves parish. If someone does would they be able to look something up for me please.

I have a Robert Grant (agricultural labourer aged 40) living in a property in Coltfield in the parish of Alves (district no. 125)  in the 1841 census. And nearby there is a household which contains an Isabella Ross aged 60, another Isabella Ross aged 40, Margaret Reid aged 15, female servant, and John Grant aged 4.

I think John Grant is the son of Robert Grant and is living with his grandmother Mrs Ross who was formerly an Urquhardt.

I would like to find out if these households are still intact in the 1851 census or some clues as to how the families might be dispersing. Any help would be hugely appreciated.

Hi,

I found this on the 1851 census for Alves.

Moor of Coltfield.

Alexander Ross    head   age 40 Farmer of 12 acres born Forres
Isabella Ross    mother   age 73 widow Housekeeper born Forres
Isabella Ross    sister     age 48 Agricultural Labourer born Forres
Margaret Reid   niece     age 23 Dressmaker born Alves
John Grant   nephew      age 14 Scholar born Alves

The only Robert Grant in Alves was aged 50 and was a general labourer born in Abernethy, Elginshire. He was listed as a servant in the household of Alexander Gentle, the Free Church Minister in Alves.

Hope this helps,
Robert.

Thankyou so much. This is exactly what I wanted to know. Now I just have to work out whether that Robert Grant is John Grant's father.
