Fauldhouse Cemetery burial (?) WARK
« on: Friday 22 July 05 09:38 UTC (UK) »

Hi all,
does anyone happen to wander through Fauldhouse cemetery? I have an ancestor Andrew Wark d. 28/2/1880 who died (and possibly buried) in Fauldhouse and was hoping to locate his gravestone.

His daughter Christina (b. 23/12/1860 in East Benhar) was my great grandmother and emigrated to Australia. For some reason she gave her maiden name as Hazelmere (which baffled me for a while as there were noe in Scotland anywhere). She was apparently very eccentric and described as a 'real card' buy someone who knew her.

I post this as Fauldhouse is a tad inconvenient for me to get to from Sydney currently....

The Burial Register CD compiled and published by West Lothian Family History Society (www.wlfhs.org.uk) confirms that Andrew Wark wasn't buried in Fauldhouse Cemetery in 1880.  The Cemetery was only opened in 1878 and Whitburn, opened in 1862, looks a better bet.

There was indeed an interment for an Andrew Wark - three of them actually.  They were:

Andrew Wark - age not recorded - no date for interment but year given as 1880 and the funeral came from East Benhar - lair P-32.  There were no further burials in the lair up to 1975.

The others were:

Andrew Wark - age 80 - interred 8Mar1924 - lair H-180.  Also in the lair is John Wark - age 84 - interred 27Nov1953 and the funeral came from 2 Beechwood Cottages, East Whitburn.

Andrew Wark - age 76 - interred 19Jan1944 - lair H-179 and the funeral came from East Whitburn.  Also in the lair was Christina Wark - age 69 - interred 21May1941 and the funeral came from Blackburn.

Hope this helps.

Wow, thanks for that - the first one looks spot on. I guess interment but nothing else means no gravestone (?) Sad
Thanks for this - haven't done much genealogy lately but this may start me off again....
cheers

Hi Mr-Aitch

I've had a look on the WLFHS site and can't find the burial register CD you refer to. I would like to purchase this. Can you give me a clue as to where to find it?

Hi, Jean.

Apologies for the delay in replying - I've been in Ireland on holiday and missed your request.  (Hi sicknote - did find a little about the Morrows.  I'll be in touch soon)

If you go back to our site, Jean, and select the Publications List on the navigation panel on the left it will take you to a new page with the CD the 2nd item from the top.

Any problems - get back to me.

Hi all,

I am also a decendent of Andrew Wark d(1880).  His son Alexander (1849), was my great grandfather.  I was wondering does anybody know the answer to the "Hazelmere" mystery!

Aha! (thank goodness I still have the same email address) nearly four years on and we have never found an answer to the name Hazlemere (and there are a few of us)

Hi Cas,

Thanks for your message.  Sorry I have to reply this way, but until I have 3 postings on the forum, this is the only way...  Alexander Wark came to adelaide in 1877 or there abouts.( going to ckeck passenger lists in Adelaide).  He married Ellen Ward.  They had 8 children.  He worked as a builders labourer.  But he used to like going away to fossik in the hills for gold or anything else really.  He always read one book everynight (Robbie Burns).  My mother now has the book.  Its not in very good condition.  As to other family stories,  I did hear about the dissagreement that Andrew wark (1818)., had with his family over the farm.  Something about the eldest son inheriting the farm under scottish law.  I dont know if this is true or not , my grandmother always liked to embelish her tales to make them sound better.  She was even convinced her ancestors came from Wark Castle.  The 3 Wark Sisters ( Helen ,Jane & Christina) All Came to adelaide And changed their names to Hazelmere.  Also Helens Daughter Mary.  I do know that Helen Was an unmarried mother And she left Scotland when Mary was a few Months old.  The other two sisters came out together on the same ship.  But why they all changed their names to Hazelmere, I dont know.
The plot thickens.  What family stories do you have?  What Possessions did you recieve?  Sorry just Curious !   Anyway I think I have bored you long enough.

have you seen the 1871 census?Alexander was a  Pit Pony Driver in Whitburn aged 19.

For completeness, I'd appreciate marriage and death dates and locations for Alexander Wark and Ward.

Some other oddness - Christina Wark (aka hazlemere) had a daughter Olive who was born around 1882 who was apparently a half sister to her siblings (i.e. not the same father). Chrstina got married to a William John Quartley-Payne on 31st October 1882 in St Peter's Church Woolloomoolloo Sydney (funnily enough I had been in this church 15 odd years ago at a party or art exhibition or something). She and William had a "Birthday Motto Book" wiht miscellaneous birthdates, deathdates, marriage dates and some newspaper clippings which I now have.

I have never found a birth record for Olive - she married someone called Martin and died in Cessnock NSW in 1961 and had 12 sons. I have never found living relatives off this branch.

I just found some more notes I made:

There is an entry in her 'Birthday Motto Book' left home for London and Australia July 31 1878. Landed in Adelaide September 18 1878, married September 18 1879.

Later I found:

77/23 Ship Forfarshire arrived Adelaide September 23rd 1877.
Application number        Name                        Age
257                              WARK   Jane              19
258                              WARK   Christina        16

Under Helen WARK in my genealogy bit I have (but I can't recall where I got it! Will have to keep looking):

She owned a lolly shop in Adelaide.

65/11 Ship Lady Milton arrived Adelaide November 29th 1865
