Guestbooks - any ideas?
« on: Friday 22 July 05 12:27 BST (UK) »

Hi

Has anyone come across some open source or otherwise free Guestbooks that can be incorporated into my website?

Julian kindly offered a few suggestions, (http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,74135.msg310192.html#msg310192) but I was wondering if anyone had come across any more?

cheers

I use Guestbook.de
http://two.guestbook.de/
on my website and have done for a number of years with few problems.
It is one I would recommend.

The other guestbooks work well and all run on other sites, rather than on your own webspace.

You can upload scripts to your free RootsChat webspace to do things like guestbooks.

I've found this script:
http://www.promosi-web.com/script/guestbook/

It's very easy to set up. I've uploaded it to your site, and set it up for you:
http://etherington.rootschat.net/guestbook/
(lets hope lots of RootsChatters leave you great messages!)

If anybody else wants it setting up then please let me know.

Trystan - that's brilliant / fantastic!  Thanks a lot!  It was a nice surprise to find this.  I've even managed to link to it from my site after I'd realised what you'd done! Grin

I think you'll have a queue for this now!

Many thanks

Paul, I'm pleased you're pleased!

The script is only two files and it's dead easy to set up so hopefully a few will have a go at trying it out. Smiley

PS I've modifed yours only a little bit to include your logo, and added the warning about email addresses.

Hi Trystan - do you have any suggestions for this wee prob?

I've dloaded the guestbook files from promosi-web, unzipped, modified the index with colours, email etc. The index file uploads no prob onto my site directory using the rootschat FTP manager, but it's giving me 'bad extension' on the ardgb.dat file when i try to upload it.  In the read-me it says something about altering the .dat file if working with linux? i'm windows here at home, but the server is linux? Anyway...

also (dumb question) how do i move files in and out of folders in the directory? for example, putting a gif into the images directory folder? *duh*

Thanks for all your help - just reading your and everyone's posts has got me this far!

Cheers

Hi Ger,

I've just uploaded the guestbook files from promosi-web, too, and had the same problem.

I solved it by renaming the ardgb17.dat file to ardgb17.php and then uploading it to my site.

On the site, I then used my FTP manager to change the name back to ardgb17.dat, and also to change the attribute to -666 (so people can write in it !!)

And now I'm in business !!!!

Good luck !

Oh my lord Bob lol THANK YOU Smiley

I'm off to your site to check out what the promosi book looks like. Hopefully with your advice I can change to promosi now Smiley I got a Dreambook which is okay, but there's lots of room for improvement on my entire site I think!

Thanks again,

If you want to use this free promosi-guest book, you will also need to edit the file index.php

//--Change the following variables

//Title of your guestbook
  $title = "Welcome to my guestbook";
<== Message at top of page
//Change "admin" with your own password. It's required when you delete an entry
  $admin_password = "*******";
<= password of your choice
//Enter your email here
  $admin_email = "myname@myemail.com";
//Your website URL
  $home = "../index.htm";
<== Link back to your home page
//Send you an email when someone add your guestbook, YES or NO
  $notify = "YES";
<== it's your choice !! The message in the GB will also be in the e-mail
//Your Operating System
//For Windows/NT user : WIN
//For Linux/Unix user : UNIX
  $os = "UNIX";
  <==  RootsChat Operating system

You dont need to change the rest, but you can if want to.
i.e. change the color scheme, or guest book size
If you are not sure, then leave them as they are !
Or save a copy of this file (to come back to) and play aroun with the colours !

//Maximum entry per page when you view your guestbook
  $max_entry_per_page = "10";
//Name of file used to store your entry, change it if necessary
  $data_file = "ardgb17.dat";
//Maximum entry stored in data file
  $max_record_in_data_file = "300";
//Maximum entries allowed per session, to prevent multiple entries made by one visitor
  $max_entry_per_session = 2;
//Color & font setting
  $background = "#555555";
  $table_top = "#D3B68E";
  $table_content_1a = "#EDEEE8";
  $table_content_1b = "#E4E4E4";
  $table_content_2a = "#FFF8F0";
  $table_content_2b = "#FFEFDF";
  $table_bottom = "#D3B68E";
  $table_border = "#000000";
  $title_color = "yellow";
  $link = "blue";
  $visited_link = "blue";
  $active_link = "red";
  $font_face = "verdana";
  $message_font_face = "arial";
  $message_font_size = "2";

Hi Trystan,  I am now trying to upload ardguest17 to the webspace and got the index up but when trying to upload the ardgb17 file, it comes up with Extension file error, do you know what I am doing wrong?

Regards,

Gordon.
