I am trying to trace any family history for William Hodge b 27/2/1834 in Costorphine, Midlothian.  Married Agnes Bishop in 1855.  Can anyone help with where to go from here?

First of all, have a look in the 1881 census, which produces the following likely entry.......

Dwelling:   7 Burnside St Back Land
   Census Place:   Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland
Source:   FHL Film 0203656     GRO Ref    Volume 644-8    EnumDist 15    Page 20
   Marr   Age   Sex   Birthplace
William HODGE   W   49    M   Currie, Edinburgh, Scotland
   Rel:   Head
   Occ:   Quay Labourer
Agnes HODGE   U   20    F   Leith, Edinburgh, Scotland
   Rel:   Dau
   Occ:   Gilt Burnisher

What an interesting occupation!

That this is probably the correct family is shown by the results of the following "parents" search in IGI on the LDS site....

Father: William Hodge, Mother: Agnes Bishop

International Genealogical Index / British Isles - 4

 1. ROBERT HODGE - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Birth: 22 MAR 1857 Duddingston, Midlothian, Scotland

 2. AGNES SCOTT HODGE - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Female Birth: 22 DEC 1858 Leith, Midlothian, Scotland

 3. JOHN HODGE - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Birth: 08 JUN 1861 Edinburgh Parish, Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland

 4. WILLIAM HODGE - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Birth: 23 SEP 1855 Kirknewton And East Calder, Midlothian, Scotland

You now have the great advantage of an 1855 birth record as this will give you the ages and places of birth of the parents !!, and an 1855 marriage register entry which gives the exact place and date of birth.

The 1871 census entry is easy to locate at www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk as long as you realise that Agnes BISHOP had died and William had remarried by that date.
