McEwan or McKeown/Docherty Families
« on: Sunday 24 July 05 17:21 UTC (UK) »

Hi Folks
I am looking for any information on my GG Grandparents.  They were John and Rosanna (nee Docherty) McEwan or McKeown both spellings used in different documents.  John was b1829 in Co Longford.  His parents were Patrick and Ann (nee Flaherty).  Rosanna was b1833 in Co Tyrone her parents were Constantine and Sarah (Callahan?).
John and Rosanna were married in Barrhead Glasgow Scotland in 1855.  They had 3 daughters that I know off.  ANN b08/01/1856 d07/12/1857 in Johnstone Renfrew.  Sarah (my G Grandmother) was b 28/07/1857 in Johnstone Renfrew d 1933 in Barrhead Glasgow. and ROSIE b05/01/1859 in Johnstone Renfrew.  They then disappear.  Sarah married in 1880 and on her marriage cert it states that both her parents are deceased.  Does anyone know where or when they died and also what happened to ROSIE.
I would be very grateful for any information or advise as to where I go next with this.
Kind Regards
Margaret

Hello Margaret,

Searches for people in Ireland are much easier if the denomination, parish and townland are known. Occasionally Christian names can also help as the surname of a grandparent may be used with, or in place of, Christian names that we're accustomed to seeing most
of the time.

You'll have to rely on Church records as civil registration in Ireland was not introduced until 1864. Non Catholic marriages were registered from 1845 onwards. When registration for BDMS started in 1864 some people didn't bother with the registration for a few years after that date. Keep your fingers crossed that church records still exist.

Although this message is on the County Longford board it sounds as though the answer might be in Scotland.
...John and Rosanna (nee Docherty) McEwan or McKeown...  John was b1829 Co Longford...  Rosanna was b1833 Co Tyrone... married in Barrhead Glasgow Scotland 1855.  3 daughters ANN b08/01/1856 d07/12/1857 Johnstone Renfrew.  Sarah (my G Grandmother) b 28/07/1857 Johnstone Renfrew d 1933 Barrhead Glasgow. and ROSIE b05/01/1859 Johnstone Renfrew.  They then disappear.  Sarah married in 1880 and on her marriage cert it states that both her parents are deceased.  Does anyone know where or when they died and also what happened to ROSIE.
Have you looked for deaths of John and Rosanna on Scotland's People? As they were there in 1859 when Rosie was born it's most likely they died in Scotland. Also, have looked for the family in census records in Scotland (1861, 1871)?

Hi to both Christopher and aghadowey,
Thank you for your reply.  I did in fact find out what happened to John Rosanna and Rosie and they did indeed die in Scotland aghadowey so your advise was spot on.  I'm afraid I have posted all I know about this family so I know it was a long shot that anyone would be able to give me much information.  I was hoping to get lucky and maybe someone would have recognized the names or other information from their own tree.  Would I be right in thinking that I would have to visit Ireland to check any existing records Christopher?
Kindest Regards
Margaret

Margaret- even if you were in Ireland to search for the family you would need to have more information to start looking for church records, etc. You need to know the family's religion and where they lived (parish if not actual townland not just the name of the county).

Hi aghadowey
Sorry for delay in getting back to you.  I do know this familys religion they were Roman Catholic.  As for the rest I don't know I will keep searching but may have to give up unless I can find more information in the future.
Thank you very much for your help.

Margaret - I am descended from another son of Patrick McKeown/McEwan and Ann Flaharty.  Their son Michael from whom I am descended was born c1824 in County Longford.  They also had a son Patrick and a daughter Bridget that I know of.  They were born in Sonagh, Parish of Colmcille, North Longford in 1834 and 1839 respectively.  Patrick senior died 13 Dec 1839 and Ann died 31st Dec 1839 - the same year Bridget was born.  They were both buried in Colmcille, but I don't know exactly where.  I don't know what happened to son Patrick or daughter Bridget.

Michael moved to Scotland and married in Neilston in 1850.  Neilston is very close to Barrhead, so it looks like the brothers were together to some extent.  Michael named one of his sons John.

Looks like we are distant cousins! Smiley

Hi Joyce
I'm delighted to hear from you.  I posted this message quite some time ago and had almost given up hearing from anyone.  You're right Barrhead and Neilston are very close and I'm delighted to think that John had some family near by.  John and Rosanna married in Barrhead but their first child was born in Johnstone Renfrewshire.  John and Rosannas 2 surviving children Sarah (my great Gran) and Rosie lived in Barrhead.  I would love to share our joint tree.  Can this be done via this site or by swapping e-mail addresses?  Please let me know.
Regards
Your cousin (distant) :

Hi again Margaret
I'd love to share our family tree information.  I'm not quite sure how we do that on this site.
