Bertrams
« on: Sunday 24 July 05 19:12 BST (UK) »

My husband's family are Bertrams from East Lothian, who came to Canada in a trickle between 1860 and 1900 (9 surviving children from one generation and ultimately their parents eventually ended up in Ontario). Anyone else researching this name?

His 2G grandfather was Hugh Bertram, who was the farm stewart for George Hope's farm, Fenton Barns, near Dirleton. Prior generations were from Whitekirk, Aberlady etc.

Other surnames in the line include Mack, Walker, Lamb, Dudgeon, Johnstone and possibly Murray.

Hi Mary, Any chance that you would have had an Alexander BERTRAM who md. Janet GRINLAW/LEY and was school teacher in Garvald ELN for some time.  Cheers Ruth

Do you have a time frame for your Alexander? I have a number of them, and don't know all their wives. For example, I have an Alexander Garibaldi Bertram, born in Athelstaneford in 1863, son of David Craig Bertram and Mary Hogg, and I know he was a teacher (he shows up in the 1881 census as a student teacher).

Alexander was born about 1721 and died 1801  aged 80 in Garvald and is buried there.  His first wife was Janet Harley.  Perhaps a bit early?  Cheers Ruth

I see a Merilyn Pedrick from South Australia has him in a pedigree resource file on the mormon site. Wonder who his parents were? The oldest pair I've got in my line that I can hang my hat on is a James Bertram and Mary Murray who were probably married about 1733 - they were in the same vicinity - Aberlady, Whitekirk etc.

Thanks Mary.  I've contacted Merilyn P. - she put me in contact with one of my mother's first cousins several years ago which is a pretty wonderful thing.  I'm transcribing Garvald OPRs and see Alexander's name popping up everywhere as witness but haven't found a definite birth for him (in that area anyway).  Cheers Ruth

Hi Mary

In my Burnside family line I have

Jean Burnside b1782 Haddington married 1807 at Garvald to Peter Bertram babt1781 Garvald.
Do these names ring any bells with you?
I have nothing beyond Peter Bertram unfortunately.
Happy to share any useful info I have.
