HARRIS / RIDDELL
« on: Monday 25 July 05 09:50 BST (UK) »

Morning Gang, New to the boards, researching my family and been stuck for several weeks with a little riddle.
My HARRIS family born in HARLINGTON.
SARAH   (Mother born 1816 Millbrook) Father JAMES (born 1819 Harlington)  Had Daughter SARAH my Great great Grandmother who later became SARAH RIDDELL and was buried as such in CROCKENHILL KENT in 1945
Had my great grandmother Mary Ann Harris born MINSTER KENT 1870
But can see no marriage to anyone named RIDDELL anywhere.

I have seen the name RIDDELL on something I was reading about Bedfordshire, but do not know much about the family, or even if she shacked up with someone from there. Any leads would be of help....
Does anyone have any ideas?
Yours from a frustrated researcher!  Huh

Hi Lindy
Welcome to Rootschat.

So as I read it Mary Ann Harris was illegitimate born in Kent and between 1870 and 1945 Sarah Harris married a Riddell.

Did Sarah have any children after Mary Ann? Other little riddles???

Have you been able to find any of them in 1871/81/91/01 censuses?

Which years in the GRO indexes have you checked?

Could Riddell have been a second, late, marriage?

I'm looking through censuses as I write. If I find anything I'll get back to you.

Regards

David

Hi Lindy04,

and welcome to rootschat.

I just can't find any Mary Ann Harris born 1870 in Minster Kent in 1881 or 1871.
Did you find her?
I think I have found Sarah Harris, born ca. 1850, in 1871, 1881, 1891 and 1901 still a single at her parents'. There is no Mary Ann with her.

If you know where and when Mary Ann was born, does it mean you have her birth certificate? Could you post the details?

Sarah's marriage to a Riddell must have taken place between 1901 and 1945. FreeBMD is far from complete for this time frame. Have you already searched the (complete) GRO indexes (Don't really know how helpful that would be before the spouse's surname was given on the index, though)
Might be useful to get her death certificate, in case her husband is down as the informant of the death?

Hi Lindy

Found them in 1901 living in St Mary Cray, Kent

Sarah Riddel mother in law widow 54 born Harlington living with Abraham Richards and Mary Ann Richards 31 b Minster. So that narrows down the marriage a bit. Between 1870 and 1900. (There's a marriage between Abraham Richards and Mary Ann Harris in 1895 on FreeBMD)

But I can't trace either Sarah or Mary Ann as Riddell or Harris in any earlier census

Regards

Seems I had followed a wrong line earlier, very sorry!
Strange her parents matched with your details...

Me again

1891 - this might be them, but it might not!

A house cart, Hamlet of CrockenHill, Eynsford (is it a coincidence that CrockenHill is where Sarah was buried?)
Joseph Robinson h m 50 general dealer b Irchester Northants
Sarah Robinson wife 44 b Harlington
Mary A Robinson dau 21 b Westminster London (could the enumerator have heard Minster and put 2 and 2 together, but made 5?)

If it is the right Sarah you will need to be looking for a marriage between Sarah Robinson and Riddell between 1891 and 1901.

Now found them in 1881 which tends to confirm that this is the right family

Railway Huts, Barcombe, Sussex
Joseph Robinson head marr 40 railway ganger b Northampton
Sarah Robinson wife 34 Hutkeeper B Beds
Mary A Harris stepdau 11 scholar b Westminster Middx

In 1871 same family in Olney, Bucks
Joseph Robinson lodger 30 lab on railway  b Irchester N'thants
Sarah Robinson lodger wife 24 straw plaiter b Irchester Beds!!
Mary A Robinson dau 1 b London Middx
