What was St Chads,Shrewsbury, 1901.
« on: Tuesday 23 September 08 08:04 BST (UK) »

Hi, can anyone out there enlighten me with regard to exactly what sort of establishment was  The College,   St Chads,Shrewsbury in 1901.

The 1901 census  shows my Grandma Rebecca Jones (15)as being in training as a Domestic at  "2 The College, St Chads, Shrewsbury".

Both my  Grandma's parents were dead by this time and I have heard that  it was possibly a training place run by Nuns for orphaned girls like my Grandma.

Does anyone have any information about the place or even a photo?

Would be grateful for any info please.

Barbara.

St Chads is one of the churches in Shrewsbury and there is often an area called "The College" near a church - as at Durham for example.   Have you looked at www.genuki.com to see if it is mentioned.  Local directories?

Hi Andrea,

No, I've not accessed local directories yet, how do you do that? Sorry. I'm a bit of a novice at this game.

Some have links from genuki but there is also a historicaldirectories site.  If you google it it should come up.  Looking at the tips at the top of the beginners' board might be useful too.
