Has anyone come across a Jane Swepson b. 1820s or possibly early 1830s? Her father's name was Joseph and he was a carpenter.
She married one of my ancestors, John Lappage, in Copford Essex in 1856 but died in 1859 thus neatly avoiding the 1861 census which is the earliest information I have access to other than IGI which has no reference to her or Joseph (one hell of a sentence, that!).
Although she is down as marrying from Copford, as there are no Swepsons in Essex at any time, I have to conclude she came from elsewhere. Swepson appears to be a name local to Offord Cluny and Bedford.
The only Swepsons in Offord Cluny in 1841 were Richard 65, Ann 65 and John 35 in one family unit. Richard was not born in Hunts, but the other two were. Interestingly Richard's occupation was carpenter so there might be a family connection with Joseph. Age wise it would work - Richard & Ann were born 1771-76. Whilst Offord Cluny parish registers have not been extracted on the IGI there are a number of member submissions for this family, none of which include Joseph or Lucy, which doesn't mean that they do not appear in the parish register.
But in later censuses I couldn't see a Joseph Swepson born in Hunts - just Joseph Swepson in 1881 - a carpenter in Hampstead age 67 born Bedford. Again he could just about have had a daughter who married in 1856.
I was about to suggest Essex 1851 but I see from your earlier posts that has already drawn a blank. And looking at the other reference to Joseph Swepston in 1861 his daughter Eliza 19 was born in Bedford, so the family should have been there at least in 1841.
I'll have a look through Bedford 1841 this afternoon and see what I come up with. (Bedford 1851 is indexed so you may get lucky there)
Regards
David
