Herts. info from Gentleman's Magazine
« on: Tuesday 26 July 05 11:58 BST (UK) »

Would anybody have a copy of the following book please?

(Taken from the net)......
Hertfordshire 1731-1800 as recorded in the Gentleman's Magazine

Edited by Arthur Jones

This book contains all Hertfordshire material of any importance which was published in The Gentleman's Magazine in the period from 1731 to 1800. It is a rich resource for research: history, news items of every kind, reports of robberies, court proceedings, executions, fires and, of course, the obituaries for which the magazine was particularly famous. Arranged chronologically with a detailed index of names and places and with supplementary listings for births, marriages, bankruptcies and deaths.

ISBN 0 901354 73 2 hardback, 280 pages

I would love to know if any MEDCALF family members are recorded please.

It certainly sounds like a useful Family History book to have for Herts - any comments re this book?

Thanks
Di

Hi Diana,

I have seen a copy of Arthur Jones book at HALS.  There are no direct references to the family Medcalf.   The nearest was an entry in the entries for Deaths for Prominent people in the County viz -
15th May 1748  Sloper Metcalfe Esq.,

I also looked at the Wareside History Miscellany book and found one reference to Medcalf.   Chapter ten refers to the Grammar School and note 24 to the article reads as follows :-
The deed of sale for "Wareside Grammar" is dated 1891 and lists the following trustees:  Solicitor Daniel Fearson of Whitehall, Richard B Croft of Fanhams Hall, Edmund Hanbury of Thundridge, George Gisby of Ware, John Baptist Brandram of Ware, Revd Robert Higgens of Holy Trinity, Wareside, the Revd Alfred Cales of Ware, the Revd Edward Kirkby of St.Mary's, Ware, Robert Walters of Ware Priory, Caleb Hitch of Ware, Robert Harradence of Ware, chemist Ben Medcalf of Ware, chemist Sam Woollatt of Ware and bookseller George Price of Ware.

Hope this will be of some use to you.

Regards   ...   Peter

Thank you Peter,

The Ben Medcalf mentioned is one of mine and as he was very involved in the Ware community it is not surprising to find him listed in this capacity.

I just wish I could find more about his father (Ben snr)
At least I can now cross both books of my "must find" list

Thanks and truly appreciated
Rgds
Diana

Hello Di, Dolly and Peter,

Click here to see some great postcards of R. W. Harradence of Ware which are on the hertfordshire-genealogy.co.uk website.

Thanks Christopher,

I had a look at the postcards and they bought a smile to my face. I started this thread a long time before I visited Ware so had no idea what the place was like then. Now I can view the Postcards in a different light - they bring back some lovely memories of my visit there last year.

Thanks

Di
