PLUMBE and/or Walkling in Henley-on-Thames
« on: Tuesday 26 July 05 12:11 UTC (UK) »

Plumbes were three generations of 'upstanding citizens' (Drapers, Mayors, and also Magistrates) in Henley in the period 1790 till approx 1870. Wm Frederick Walkling by contrast (poor fellow) was an employee caught thieving - in a major way - from the Drapery shop in 1837. After a trial written up in "The Times" in March 1838, he was duly sentenced to be transported for 14 years, but <appears> to have evaded that sentence handed-down at Hertford Assizes.

Any mentions of  PLUMBE, or pointers as to where to find out more about Frederick Walkling, would be appreciated.
