Brick wall Binns in Ripon
« on: Tuesday 26 July 05 15:51 BST (UK) »

My brick wall is my g g grandfather Joseph Binns. From the 1861 census info he was born in Yorkshire, in Ripon about 1817.
His parents were John and Hannah (this from 1841 census in Stalybridge) which I am fairly certain is the right family. 1851 census water damaged and unreadable.

There are quite a few possibilities of marriages for his parents but unable to say for definite which is the right one.
There are entries on IGI which could be Joseph's baptism on 6/10/1816 in Ripponden, this was in Yorkshire then, with siblings Mary, Jane and Sarah but how can I be sure.

Anyone come up with anything I can try?

The problem is that Ripponden is just outside Halifax and isn't that near Ripon which is in North Yorkshire. So if the Census is correct and Joseph is from Ripon then I doubt that the Ripponden Joseph is the one you are looking for.

Having said that, Ripponden is nearer to Stalybridge than Ripon, so don't discount the connection yet. Ripponden is about 44 miles SSW of Ripon but only about 24 miles NE of Stalybridge.

Do you have any marriage details for him? Who and where did he marry? That might point to some clues.

Do the siblings you mention cross match with any census & IGI information that you hold?

Thanks for your help.

I have the 1841 census which I think is them in Stalybridge. They were in the Lancashire part, it is part Lancashire and part Cheshire.

1841 census  Mount Street Stalybridge

John Binns - head - married - 65 - water carrier - born this     county
Hannah Binns - wife      “     - 55- not born lancs
Joseph Binns - son - single - 20 - mechanic - not born lancs
Mary Binns - daughter - single - 20 - weaver - not born lancs
Hannah Harrop - visitor - 20 - weaver - not born lancs

Joseph married Martha Gatley in 1843 in Mottram. Joseph was a mechanic so that ties in    but he stated that his father was John and a clothier. I feel the census is right due to the marriage nearby in 1843. Joseph must have been in the area to have met Martha but as all the children were born outside Lancashire they must have settled elsewhere first.

Nothing on IGI at all except the Ripponden baptisms, parents names are correct and there was a sibling called mary born 4 years after Joseph so that fits too.

Have not been able to find John or Hannah in 1851 census presuming they were still alive and have not found deaths of the right age in the right place either.
Any suggestions?

I had a quick look on the IGI and, given the dates of the siblings births and John & Hannah's ages, I reckon they got married sometime between 1801 and 1811. Searching the IGI for their marriage, between those years, gives 9 hits, of which 5 could be possibles, based on the Ripponden assumption. There are 2 marriages in Elland and 2 in Halifax, both of which are near Ripponden. There is also a possible marriage at Rochdale, which isn't far from Stalybridge.

It might be worth your while checking the original parish registers for those marriages, to see if John is listed as coming from somewhere in Lancashire or, in the Rochdale case, whether Hannah comes from Yorkshire.

Sorry I don't think i'm going to be much help on this, but checking the parish registers may be a starting point.
