Can anyone help with my search for the parents and siblings of Margaret Jemima AITON? According to censuses she was born in about 1834 at Faversham, Kent. Her father was a Dr William AITON, RN., She married in 1853, Edwin LONG who was a Victorian portrait painter and RA. I believe her elder siblings were born in Scotland but is the 1841 census for Faversham available?

Hi Pat,
I've been through the 1841 census for Faversham, but can't find any family with the name Aiton. Could you post the marriage details, including Margaret's address, then maybe we can find her on the 1851 census and work backwards to the 1841. Sorry that's all I can suggest for now,

Hi Carol,
Thank you very much for looking for Margaret AITON in 1841. Unfortunately all I know about her marriage is that it took place in March 1853 before the consulate in Rome. Do you know where I could get more details of that?
When she died in 1907 the death announcement in the Times gave her father as the late Dr William AITON RN.

A consultate marriage would be recorded in the overseas section at the Family Records Office. It wouldn't necessarily have been indexed on FreeBMD as yet or 1837online (but I haven't used the latter so I don't know that for sure)
You could ask for a search at the General Registry Office if you are reasonably certain of the date. It costs more to request a search than just producing a certificate if you know the exact reference details.

'Doctor William AITON, second son now in life of Sheriff Aiton, was
appointed assistant Surgeon in the Royal Navy, in 1807, and was advanced to
Surgeon in 1811. He took Degree as Doctor of Medicine in 1820, and is now
(April 1830) serving in the Fleet at Navarino, in the Mediterranean. He
married in 1817, Georgina SMITH, daughter of James SMITH, house-steward and
confidential servant, to James Earl of Hopeton; and she brought him four
sons, William, John, Sinclair, and James; and three daughters, Mary, Agnes,
and Georgina.'
From another website John Smith Aiton died aged 25 2nd son of Dr William Aiton RN. Died Malta 1st April 1847.

Which shows the account of William's children may not have included all those born later as the account stopped before their births.
William's naval records should be at the National Archives.
If he returned to Scotland to retire then it is worth checking Scottish censuses and also Scottish wills

I can't thank you enough for that information. Although I'd found some of the sites the one about Dr William Aiton's career had eluded me and is very useful.
Amongst Margaret's elder siblings is a Sinclair which explains why she called one of her sons Maurice St Clair LONG.
I'm very grateful for the time and interest you have shown in my research.

Following on the information sent me by Valda - I have now found the death of Dr William AITON in Glasgow in 1863 - but it says he is the widower of Margaret nee PATRICK. So it looks as if he had a second wife. Although his daughter gives her birth place on censuses as Faversham Kent in about 1834 - Valda found an apparent sibling
