Help please with grandmother born in workhouse
« on: Tuesday 27 July 04 20:58 BST (UK) »

I am hoping someone might be able to help me with my grandmother and her mother
Frances Louisa Lewis born 29/06/1888 in Union workhouse wotton /within  no father Mother Mary elisabeth Lewis a domestic servant of Barton St Mary.
apart form knowing Frances went to India and married a soldier Charles Dowell.
, I can find no trace of her or her mother I am hoping someone might be able to help.
I am hoping to go to the record office sometime to see if they have any workhouse records but if anyone could help I cannot find them on the 1891 census or 1901
thanks anyway  sandie

Hi Sandie
1901 census Glos
Francis Lewis  (female) age 12 born Gloucester a visitor at the home at Blaise Bailey (East Dean area of Glos) of Emma Williams age 55 a widow born at East Dean. Also in the house were Emmas children all born at Littledean George age 27 a coal hewer,Emma age 20 and Arthur age 17 also a coal hewer.
The above might be worth looking at!!
A few years back i needed to look at the records of Gloucester workhouse circa 1840 but nothing from that time had survived.Anyway good luck with your research Tralee

thanks tralee,

I did pick up on that 1901 a while ago but couldnt find anything else, but as you have noticed it as well makes me think there might be something worth looking into.
I did look at Gloucestershire web page and it doesnt look as though the time I want survived either still never know.
I havent been able to find any trace on 1891 either they just vanished. thanks for looking  sandie
