seeking any info on the following: Robert Logan who married Janet McClune. Robert was b c1810, I think? They had a son, William Logan (my great grandfather) who married Janet McCulloch on 18/12/1868. Janet McCulloch was the daughter of William McCulloch c1818 and Jean Fleming c1822, married 1843. Janet and William had a son, James Logan (my grandfather) born 26/01/1887 and married Violet James, b1897. Any info on James Logan's siblings please? Also, any info on their son, Ivor, who doesn't appear on other sibling's birth certificates, b c1915. Possibly illigitimate son of Violet. Used the name Ivor Logan but could have been born Ivor James. Thanks, Julie

Hi Julie When was William LOGAN born (and where?)and do you know what his occupation was - if he & Janet McCULLOCH married 1868, and son James born 1887, then I would expect to find them on Census 1881 with earlier children. The IGI has the 3 following born to William LOGAN & Janet McCULLOCH: Jeanie Fleming LOGAN Born 04 SEP 1870 Kilmarnock, Ayr, Scotland Jessie LOGAN born 22 MAY 1872 Muirkirk, Ayr, Scotland William LOGAN born 24 Mar 1869, Kilmarnock, Ayr Scotland (mother named as Jane McCULLOCH)
On Census 1881 is a family as follows - the mother Janet is right age and birthplace to be your Janet McULLOCH who was born 1848 Muirkirk (off IGI), and it's right husband's name, and son WIlliam is right too but apparently neither of the 2 girls above? There is a younger Jessie, however - your one would be 8 (nearly 9) in April 1881 - so possibly if this is your family: Jessie on Census age should be 8 not 6 (easy mistranscription error?) or else the older one died and next girl was named for her. The Census Jessie was born Riccarton, also. But no idea what became of Jeanie Fleming LOGAN - can't locate a 10 or so yr old of that name anywhere in Scotland. Maybe she died young?
There is big gap between son William and Jessie on Census - so missing Jeanie would fit right in there.

Thanks Anne, I'm betting that Jean did pass away and it must definetely be the family I want as Janet McCulloch's mother's name was Jean Fleming! I've got a copy of James McCulloch Logan's birth certificate and my great grandpop, William entered the name 'Jessie' Logan as the mother's name. This was, apparently, his nickname for her. Thankyou so much for finding this info for me as my mother had no knowledge of her father's family. She will be thrilled to know that her dad had siblings. regards, Julie

Hi Julie Glad I was of help I noted the IGI birth with the "Fleming" match and am sure all those births belong to yours but/and while I feel pretty certain the Census family is also your family, I can't be absolutely sure of course. If you could check the 1891 Census and perhaps the 1871 for them, on Scotland'sPeople it may help clarify some of the issues, especially regarding daughters Jessie and perhaps Jeanie. You might also be able to check births for the 2 Census youngest girls which would clarify their mother's maiden name as McCULLOCH or not. Also possible deaths for Jeanie & perhaps Jessie, and birth of a 2nd Jessie.
"Jessie" was very common as a pet-name for Janet, as well as often being used as a name in it's own right.
On your Grandad James' birth did it say what Grandpop William LOGAN did for a living (ie: does it match the Census William?)
Cheers Anne (in cold NZ!)

Hi Anne it has William as a 'carter' on James' birth certificate and I now have William's marriage cerificate which has him as a labourer! I'll try the 1891 census but I'm pretty certain we are on the right track. My sister mentioned that we had an aunt Jessie and I've just found out that my pop was referred to as 'wee willie' although his name was James. Mum thinks this is because he was the baby in the family. I'm guessing there would also have been a few children between 1881 and 1887 when James was born so I'll keep digging. Thanks again for your help, Julie (also cold here in Oz!)
