I am trying to trace the marriage and all children of John BOYD, civil engineer and canal surveyor, and his wife Margaret PARIS. They had at least 3 children baptised at Alva between 1816 and 1826, by which date they had settled in Burgh-by-Sands, Cumbria. Also, given John's profession, would there have been any significant waterway-building project in the area at about this time which might account for the couple's presence in Stirlingshire? Any clues or suggestions received with thanks.

From the online IGI (I presume the 3 that you referred to.
1. JOHN BOYD - International Genealogical Index Gender: Male Birth: 26 OCT 1816 Alva, Stirling, Scotland 2. MARGARET BOYD - International Genealogical Index Gender: Female Birth: 16 MAR 1819 Alva, Stirling, Scotland 3. JAMES BOYD - International Genealogical Index Gender: Male Birth: 26 AUG 1821 Alva, Stirling, Scotland
The Forth and Clyde Canal and the Union Canal met across the River Forth outside Falkirk, Stirlingshire. If my memory serves me well, the Union Canal was opened in 1822.

Thanks, ADP These are indeed the baptisms I have located; there were to my knowledge at least 7 other children born elsewhere, the last having been born - very thoughtfully - in the first quarter of civil registration! At least 3 of them seem to have followed their father into the engineering field. I wondered whether there might have been any other births in Alva between James in 1821 and the next child I have traced, baptised at Burgh in 1826.
Your suggestion re. the canal would make a lot of sense. John subsequently appears to have moved to Burgh to work on the construction of the Carlisle Canal. From the details you mention, it would in fact be possible that he undertook another contract between these two and may perhaps have added to his family at yet another location.
Many thanks.

One note of caution regarding my earlier reply. Alva is about 10 miles as the crow flies from the canals, but I think anyone travelling from Alva to the canals would have to have gone via Stirling to cross the River Forth, giving a journey of about 15 miles each way. So maybe I was being optimistic with the suggestion.
