Hi
My husband's grandfather was born in Chicago in 1910, I have a copy of his baptismal certificate stating, John Patrick Hosty was born on 31 July 1910 and baptised on 31 July 1910 at St Elizabeth's Church, Chicago. His father was John Hosty and his mother Mary Kate Burke.
I would like to try and find John and Mary Kate's marriage certificate if possible. Mary Kate Burke emigrated to Chicago through Ellis Island in 1906 - I believe John Hosty went there sometime in the early 1890s.
Any suggestions on how to trace certificates in Chicago - Mary Kate and her son returned the UK in 1915 after the death of her husband, and she married again in Durham, Uk.

Hi
The searchable marriage index only goes to 1900, so no luck there.
But this address will be of help with ordering certs.
http://vitalrec.com then click on Illinois.

I sent Kazza the Chicago-Tribune Historical Archives, get in touch with kazza and have the website posted. I don't know how to post it.
I put the name "Hosta" in the text box on the obituaries and got over 200 Hosta and related family deaths. It only prints 200 max.
put Hosta in the name box and go from there.

in the 1920 census, there is only one John Hosty and he is in Chicago however, his wife is Isabel. They do have Childer and one is John age 7. John was born in Illinois as well as the other kids. John and Isabel were both born in Ireland and came at different dates. I checked the obituaries back to 1900 and found the one with Isabel and her maiden name was not the same as what you have.
This John Hosty, the father was also listed in the 1910 census. There was another John Hosty with a wife Mary in the 1910 census (no children) but using the advance search options, I could not locate any other John or Mary Hosty listed other than John and Isabel. Any more idea's.

Ok, gotya. John was born after the census in 1910 and they left the country before the 1920 census. You can get the birth certificates from the Cook Count Health Dept, but what Val told you is much faster and not that much more. I have one more place to check for you.

John Hosty died in Chicago, Cook County on June 27, 1914. He was 35 years old. The death certificate number is, 00007402.
You can order the death certificate from the Illinois State Archives in Springfield, Illinois.
Their website is posted, by kazza.
The death certificates has a lot of information on them, I have used them many times. Place of birth, parents names and so on.

I forgot to tell you. John and Mary had a child before John that died young. I checked the Illinois State Archives, (posted website) and found several children's death, one was also a John at the right time.

Hi Hoka
Thank you for this information, my mother-in-law will be thrilled. Having gone from knowing next to nothing about her father's parents, I now have a lot more information. I tried to find them on the 1910 census.
I'll go take a look at the Illionois State Archives, as there were quite a few Hosty family members who moved to Chicago, including John's mother Margaret and brothers Timothy, Michael, Edward, Anthony and Patrick.
There are lots of things to follow up here.
Many thanks
