Not long ago I unearthed an Irish ancestor and have no idea how to go about tracing her birth and parents, etc. She came to England and married William Carter in Prestbury, Cheshire in 1836. Her name is Margaret Broph(e)y and she was born c.1816 in Castletown, Queens County.
Thanks for any help. Catherine

Hi Catherine,
There are 5 names of Margaret Brophy in Griffiths Valuation of Laois.
Boley Upper (Clonenagh) Mountrath Dairyhill (Aghaboe) Borris-in-ossory Ballynevin (Aghmacart) Mountrath Harristown Rathdowney Coolnamony upper (Rearymore) Clonaslee.
Perhape she in among these. Around the time she was born, Castletown would have been a very small place, it still is, and records may have been slightly off. Have a look at Griffiths. Best wishes Jack

Thanks for the reply I'd given up hope of finding anything further on my Irish ancestors.
Sorry to sound thick but where would I look up Griffiths valuation?? Is it available online?
Thanks again Catherine

Hi, I have replied to you before re Margaret Brophy, just to let you know I am still on your case, I've just discovered that my Brophy's moved around the Castletown area, more that I had realised. I am hoping to came acrss your Margaret when I get another chance to go to Dublin, (I only managed to get back to 1837 before I ran out of time)

Thank you so much for those. I'll dig out my file on that family now and see if I can fit them in! Margaret born to Brophy and Ann Cashin seems to be a good match to be mine I think. Castletown was only a small village back then wasnt it, so it wouldn't be likely there'd be a few Margaret Bropheys around the same time?
(do you know what "sponsors" would have done? pay for the christening? godparents?)
Thanks again Best Wishes Catherine

hi
sponsers were the godparents
Catletown is still a small place, the parish of Castletown covers a larger area. The christening in question Margaret Brphy says they live a Rushall, a townland just outside the village.
My dad always says that the Brophy's came from the Pike of Rushall, and this is the first evidence I have of anyone with the name living there. It needs further investigation to say whether we have a connection or not.

Thanks for those Jack. Would be interesting to compare the values to todays money. Some would have been considered reasonably comfortable looking at some of those values, wouldn't they?
Unless I can access the parish records though, I don't know how to confirm which, if any, are "mine"
Thanks again Best Wishes Catherine
