I am really lucky. My son has suddenly arrived home for a few months having been a APU studying computer science. He can set up fantastic websites in his sleep. So whats the problem?
All I have to do is type out what I want on note pad and he will teach me/do the rest. But I don't know what I want on the site. I sit in front of the lap top and freeze. What are the main ingredients of a good website. I can't help thinking who on earth will be interested in my family tree. I'm sure that once I get going there will be no stopping me it is just the start.
I have looked at the other sites listed on the link and have seen good features and the not so good. I suppose I am being too academic as usual instead of just going for it. Thats a Capricorn for you.
Any advice welcome.
Jane

Hi Jane
Well I think you have started the right way.
Look at other websites, See thoses bits you like and make a note of the page address and what it was you liked about it.
You could then sit down with your programmer and view the pages you have found. Tell him why you like them and also what you don't like. (just as important)
Show him what information you have to put on the site, Should it all be on the site. addresses, telephone numbers ?.
At the end of the day, the site will be yours, not the programmers. It should reflect your tastes and wishes. Borrow ideas from everybody, and use your own thoughts to mix the bits to make a cake that everybody can enjoy.

Hi Jane,
I can only second what gbaynes has said.
and as a possible help in this direction, look at the links in Topic: Tutorial-Help with building your website. 3. Decide what you want your website to do and how you want to present it. http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,70811.msg289867.html#msg289867
Good luck with whatever you decide, and remember, anytime you need help ... you know where to call

Hi Jane
I think looking at other people's sites is by far and the best way to start - as you have done. I remember viewing Amy K's site many months ago, and thinking I loved the informal style, and the sense of love that flowed through the descriptions of her ancestors. I also liked Keith Bateman's use of photographs and wry comments. For my own part, I decided I wanted my own site to be fun and a bit self-mocking. As I build the actual family history content (slim at the moment!) I try to keep Keith and Amy's site in mind.
cheers
Paul
