I was wondering if any could see if they could find in the marriage indexes a marriage for a John Hotchkiss to a Emma Hotchkiss.
This is a second marriage for John Hotchkiss. I know his first wife Mary Hotchkiss died in 1879. On the 1881 census in Condover, Shropshire John is married to Emma. So the marriage had to be between 1897 and 1881. I do know that Emma's maiden name was Hotchkiss as well as in Emma's will ( 1900) she left money to her brother Jeremiah Hotchkiss.
I am not sure if Emma could have been married before but I have not come up with an earlier marriage for her. I have looked on the free bmd site with no luck and have tried the IGI with no luck!!
Thank you very much.
Regards Anne Canada

hello Emma: Jeremiah is Emma's brother for sure. I have found the baptism for both Jeremiah and Emma and they have the same parents!!
I am beginning to wonder if John and Emma Hotchkiss were not actually married!! As I still have not found a marriage for them yet. But I am still looking.
Regards Anne

Sorry to join this conversation so late! I have a John Hotchkiss (d. Condover, 12 Feb 1892) married to an Emma Hotchkiss in my tree, but no record of a marriage. The Hotchkisses often married their cousins and there are frequent examples of a Hotchkiss marrying a Hotchkiss. John, I believe, was the son of Richard (b. 1786) & Mary Edwards, who married in 1808. Richard was the son of Richard Hotchkiss (1750-1831) & Mary Hotchkiss (1744-1820), who married in Wentnor in 1775. I am descended from his twin brother, William (1786-1859). I'd be interested to hear whether you've found out anything more about your John & Emma (and Jeremiah) since this posting. All best, (another!) Emma

Hi Emma: I think there may be a connection here. I will have to get my binder out with my Hotchkiss families in. As I have two lines of Hotchkiss's. My 3xgrandparents are William Hotchkiss and Mary Hotchkiss. William's father is a John and Mary Ann's father is a Richard Hotchkiss.
I will get back to you later on today.
Regards
Anne

Hi Emma: We are talking about the same John Hotchkiss. In fact I have a copy of his will. It states he died 12th Feb. 1892 at Condover Green, Shrop.
The Mary Ann Hotchkiss I mentioned in the other message is a sister to John Hotchkiss.
Would you like a copy of the Will of John Hotchkiss?? Also have a copy of the will for Emma Hotchkiss as well.
Let me know, if you do want a copy PM me with your e-mail address and I will scan and send the copies to you.
Regards Anne Canada

Aha! Your mention of Canada has rung a bell and I think I realise who you are! And I believe that you have sent me documents in the past - through Jason H. Correct me if I'm wrong! I am descended through William Hotchkiss's liason with his housekeeper, Mary Jones. I went to Wentnor again this summer and found that the Hotchkiss gravestones are fast-fading. In fact, I could hardly decipher what I had been able to read (and photograph) under a year previously. All good wishes, Emma

I am related to a William Hotchkiss who moved to Canada (where I am now) he is buried here, married a Sarah Ann Cross before he moved here with her I believe in 1890's-1900. They had seperate children when they moved here. She was originally married to a John Williams both lived at Bishops castle and both were married there somewhere around 1880-1890. If anyone has info on the dates of this could you please let me know thanks .

Hello Laura:
Do you know where your William Hotchkiss was born? The Hotchkiss lines I am researching are in the areas of Church Stretton, Acton Scott, Condover, and Norbury.
I also live in Canada now.
Cheers Anne

William Hotchkiss was born 1881-Died 1961. He is buried in Riverside Cemetery in Thunder Bay, Ontario. I am not sure exactly where he was born. He moved here with his wife from Broseley, District of Madeley, Shropshire, England. They were early settlers of a small town in Ontario, Canada named Dorion, Ontario in 1912. They lived here and he went back to fight WWI. Then a Tammy Hotchkiss moved back with him from England in 1927. They had children some from there and two more here...I need to look through the records and see which were which.
