Hi Sheila

Do you have widow Ann with chd Grant and Catherine, in Census 1881, in Lanark?

152 Park St; Govan, Lanark, Scotland
Source:   Census 81: FHL Film 0203684
GRO Ref    Volume 646-1    EnumDist 9    Page 14

Ann YUILL    Head W   age 61 F  born Cromarty, Ross and Cromarty, Handicap: Deaf
Grant YUILL Son  U   age 21 M born Brorie, Sutherland, Scotland; Ship Steward
Catherine YUILL Daur U age 17 F born Glasgow; Underclothing Machinist

Maybe you can find a death record for James  in Lanark between 1863 and 1881, which would  tell you more on him?

Possibly, son Thomas YULE age 36 born Ross&Cro. might be found on same Census in Ayr, with a wife Ann R. age 32 born Banff and a dau Isabella G age 3  born Glasgow ?

Cheers

Hi Ann

No wonder I couldn't find James Yule - He died in 1858 and Catherine was not born until 1864. On her marriage cert - names father as James Yule but this was not the case!!

She was named Catherine Mann illegitimate on her birth cert. So don't know how I will show this on my tree but thanks again.

Hi Audrey
What an exciting result! Well sort of - tangled webs and all that. I hope Catherine is not your direct line?

Be interesting to have a look at them on the Census' 61 & 71 then - to see if there was a likely looking lodger in the house ...... Lips Sealed  Even better, if there was and he were in both census!

I suppose Grant Dawson YUILL born Jan 1859 was concieved before James died?  And that James did not die more than 9 months prior to Grant's birth!  It's rather an unusual name for the times, Grant- there are only 64 of them on the whole Scots Census 1881 of varying ages, so obviouy it wasn't used often in any one year. I just wondered if  his name was a 'clue'. I couldn't find any Grant DAWSON or any Dawson GRANT on C81......and it doesn't look like maiden names of his probable Grandparents?? I'm humming an Elvis song as I write this  Grin

Cheers

Hi Anne

Yes Catherine Yule is my direct line !!

It gets even more confusing Catherine Married on 23 Apr 1889 to a James Selley - Son Alfred died 26 Apr 1891 age 3 mother given as Catherine yule. ON the 1891 Census there is another son George Born 1885 but no birth cert that I can find?

Grant Dawson was a Ship Steward. Still have to find out where the name came from? Also there was a step daughter a Ann Penhorn Yule Born 30 Jun 1841 Cromarty Father given as Henry Quintin Penhorn and Christening took place 5 Years later when Ann and James Yule married.

What a mess to sort out.

Thanks again
