Dornan, Ireland, root search

I would love to discover my roots.  From writings of my grandfather, Simon Henry Dornan, (DOB 10/21/1869, Hutton, Illinois) he wrote: "The Dornans came from Ireland to the United States. I have been informed that one of my uncles living in Ireland was a cattle rancher. The Dornans had lived in one neighborhood so long that there became so many that they had trouble getting their mail mixed up. One of them changed his name to Dornin." My great-grandfather was George Franklin Dornan, DOB 12/18/1827, Ohio; his grandfather (first name unknown) immigrated to the U.S. and settled in Ohio and later moved to Hutton, Coals County, Illinois. This is all the information I have regarding the Dornan history.  Is there any hope of tracing my roots?

Hi SharMimi,

I spotted a George Dornan at Knocknarea, Magheragall, Co. Antrim. If some relations of your Dornans remained in Ireland there may be a connection. I think the only way you may be able to trace your roots is to look at all possibilities and by a process of elimination you may eventually find the right connection. Check the Dornins as the Mageragall Dornan may not be in the same locality as the Dornins. If you spot a Dornan and a Dornin in the same area then things may be looking up. Please post again if further help required.
