Anyone going to the Ayrshire Records Office
« on: Sunday 07 August 05 16:10 UTC (UK) »

If anyone is going and has some spare time could you please lookup

The marriage of John Hendren and Margaret Mc Cann.
It took place in Ayr on Jan31st 1859.
I am hoping to get their parents names but don't know if they included this information back then.
Hope someone can help me
from Maureen.

Maureen

You don't need to rely on someone visiting the records office.

This marriage, including a digitised image of the marriage register entry, should be available at www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk .

And it will include the names of both the parents of the couple.

Just to add another note to this.  Most of the OPR's are kept in libraries that carry a genealogy/local history section.  I believe those for Ayrshire can be found at Kilmarnock and one other place which for the life of me I cannot remember.  Killies library and the local history staff are very helpful, they spent some 20 minutes helping me get to grips with how the scottish present their PR's even though they had a school visiting to use their holdings who required the aid of the librarians more than most Smiley

As the marriage took place in 1859, the certificate from ScotlandsPeople will be the entry in the Statutory Register not an entry from the OPR.

Thank you all for the replies.
Is it a pay per view on Scotlandspeople,

Yes it is but the charges are reasonable in my view.

You can read about them on the ScotlandsPeople site at:
http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk
Click on FAQs, then Payment and Access.

In summary, the minimum payment you will need to make is six pounds.  This buys 30 credits which are valid for a week (if you haven't used them by the end of a week you don't lose them - if/when you purchase more time/credits, any credits remaining from your previous purchase will be added to your total).

As you have the details of the marriage, it will probably only cost you 1 credit to view/download the index search result then 5 credits to view/download the actual image of the certificate.

Jap,

Are you telling us that to view a search result costs you?

Rob,

In a word - yes.

From the FAQs:
"...  Viewing a page of index results costs 1 credit and each page will contain up to 25 search results. Viewing an image costs 5 credits  ..."

When visiting ScotlandsPeople I cut & paste all views I pay for, and always extend the search dates until I have a full page (25) you never know when that extra information will come in useful!

I recently went to edinburgh. Cost £10 for half a day 1- 4-30pm (more for full) but as many searches as u like. Each printout is 50p.

Had a good time including tatto, plus found what i was looking for but my main search success turned out to be someones name that had been mistranscribed so could prob have found it on scotlands people as i found it more by accident than design.

Having said that i would like to go back sometime.
