1841 Census Lookup Dover (?)
« on: Monday 08 August 05 19:09 BST (UK) »

Hi Listers,

I have a Police Constable Samuel COUCHMAN who was murdered while attempting to quell a disturbance in Dover in 1844. According to the article he had been on the Force for about two years and prior to that he had served in the Royal Marines for 26 years, and left a wife and two children.

Assuming that he was not a policeman at the time of the 1841 Census would it be possible to check for him in the Royal Marines in Dover or any other ( port ) cities ?

Thanks in advance,

Regards,

Bernard, Phoenix, AZ

More likely to be in Deal than Dover if still a marine - unfortunately the 1841 is not indexed, so could involve a fairly long search.

Thanks Casalguidi. I couldn't find a Cranbrook in Herts. but if this is really Kent, it matches to the year 'my' Samuel Couchman, who was born in Cranbrook in 1801. Back to the drawing board ! Thanks again.
