I have a Police Constable Samuel COUCHMAN who was murdered while attempting to quell a disturbance in Dover in 1844. According to the article he had been on the Force for about two years and prior to that he had served in the Royal Marines for 26 years, and left a wife and two children.
Assuming that he was not a policeman at the time of the 1841 Census would it be possible to check for him in the Royal Marines in Dover or any other ( port ) cities ?
I don't know if you have made any progress with this but just spotted

ADM 157/14/167 Folios 167-168. Samuel Couchman, born Cranbrook, Hertfordshire. Attestation papers to serve in the Royal Marines at Chatham 1820 (when aged 19). Discharged 1842 as Length of Service. 1st Company.
Thanks Casalguidi. I couldn't find a Cranbrook in Herts. but if this is really Kent, it matches to the year 'my' Samuel Couchman, who was born in Cranbrook in 1801. Back to the drawing board ! Thanks again.
