Pubs in Windsor ......
« on: Monday 08 August 05 21:53 UTC (UK) »

I have just found details in the 1881 census stating that a relative was the publican at
                 THE SUN INN
                28 PEASCOD STREET
                 NEW WINDSOR
                BERKS
Is it still there by any chance

                   Thanks

No I'm afraid it isn't.  Peascod Street still exists, but there are no pubs around that area of it.  There is a bookshop at 26 (thinking about it, that is big enough to have been a pub at one point  Huh) and then there is a ladies clothes shop at no 30.  I'm trying to picture if there is anything between the two, but I can't.  All I know is that there is not a pub!  They may have renumbered the street of course.

Thanks Nell
If only it was the same but then this researching would be too easy and we would not be as interested.
Thanks for the info we will have to bring the children down for a visit and a good look around.

Tazzie,

It's now a betting shop!  No wonder I couldn't remember - I don't frequent such places!  It is quite an old building, with low ceilings and the upper floor juts out about a foot or so.

I've an ancestor who had a shop in Peascod Street.

It was a Chemist and Wine Merchant shop (interesting combination)

 Cheesy Hi Tazzie,
Went up to Windsor last weekend and took some photo's for you of the buildings in Peascod Str. It's so easy to see the older building's in the street.
No 28 is next door to 27 not opposite, as I expected.
Flaming kids have had the connection lead.
Have to post pic's when i find it.... Argh.!!

    Here you go, found it.

This is looking (south) down the street, away from the castle.
No 27, betting shop, with 28,29,30 next door.
Inside is quite low ceiling with the old beams, can imagine it as a pub.
When the numbers went from the top left down to the end, then back up the right hand side, it something else to find out.....

Hi Lesanne,
What a great photo. It looks really old. Little Nell descibed it in her posting.Yes you can just imagine it as a pub it still has some character(apart from big corals sign).I will add it to our photo collection on more place to show my boys as they learn about our ever growing family

Thank you for all of your time and efforts

                      Happy hunting
