Henry Butler and James Sturgess, Kintbury,1860

Henry Butler was then an old man; James Sturgess aged 9.  Seeking details - unable to locate either directly in census, 1861.  Perhaps neither lived in Kintbury but somewhere near.

Hi Roly - and welcome to Rootschat

can you tell us anything more at all about these people - have you found James Sturgess in other census and what does he give as his place of birth?

There is one born 1848 in Kintbury - but I can't find one born 1852

I have the 1851 for Kintbury also - but I can't see a Henry Butler - how are these two related?

Debbie G - Thanks for prompt reply.

I have a James Sturgess, born Kintbury, aged 2 in 1851, son of James S (35) and Eliza (30).  No other candidates suggest trhemselves immediately.

No Henry Butler at all but a Thomas Henry, born Kintbury, aged 60...only candidate so far (but, then, maybe he lived outside Kintbury).

No relation.  Henry employed a James to help him sell ballads - Henry was blind.

Hi

I found James Sturgess aged 13 in 1861  (born 1848) which I think is that one - by then he is lodging in Avington and working as a carters boy - so if he was helping a ballard pedler in 1860 it wasn't for very long.

I cannot find any trace of an elderly Henry Butler who was blind in the area at all - have tried Hampshire and Wiltshire as well as they all sort of border near Kintbury - can I ask what the source of your info was?

Sorry I can't help more

A misreading of source notes...I think that some of the details are now more clear.  The father's name was James Strugess.  The son's name was not recorded.  I refer back to the James Sturgess (wife Eliza) already found.  In 1861 said Jaames had a son named Jessie, agricultural labourer, aged 10.  Seems to be the most likely candidate for Henry Butler's companion.

Nothing further on Henry Butler.

Evidently a Henry Butler in Newbury.  Would welcome census details from 1851, 1861...
