Hiya all,
Does anyone know where i can find information on landowners in Boyndie, Banffshire.
I am trying to find out information on both Robert Still and his sons Andrew and Alexander, all had a few acres of arable land in the area during the 1800s.
Also, im trying to find James Still, Roberts son who was born in 1822, i have been through Scotlands people many times and can find no other records for him, i believe he died before 1841 going by the census for that time, any ideas how i can find out what happened to him?
Thanks, macduff

The 1881 census has ......
Dwelling: Rose St No 2 Going North East Side Census Place: Burntisland, Fife, Scotland Source: FHL Film 0203517 GRO Ref Volume 411 EnumDist 4 Page 5 Marr Age Sex Birthplace James STILL M 58 M Banff, Banff, Scotland Rel: Head Occ: Railway Engine Driver Jane STILL M 63 F Kinghorn, Fife, Scotland Rel: Wife Occ: Railway Engr Wife Margaret THOMSON M 30 F Burntisland, Fife, Scotland Rel: Daur Occ: Corporals Wife John Mc Kenzie HILL OR STILL 6 M Burntisland, Fife, Scotland Rel: Grandson
The 1872/1873 list of landowners and heritors shows no STILLs in Banffshire.

Nae prob, but don't get too excited before you prove that this is "your" James.
Everything fits but how do you know that there weren't 2 of that name born in or near Banff around the same time?
Go to www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk and search for James's death, - hint, enter 1823 as his year of birth and select a range of years for his birth of +/-5. There's two hits and one's in Fife, and Scottish death register entries show the names of both parents.
It looks like his marriage was pre-1855 so that there isn't a statutory record for him, - this from IGI.......
JAMES STILL Marriages: Spouse: JEAN LONIE Family Marriage: 12 JUL 1847 Kinghorn, Fife, Scotland
It occurs to me that you may not realise that very few farmers back then owned the land that they farmed, - they were tenants, so don't appear on list of landowners.

It is my James, as soon as i read your post i went onto scotlands people and downloaded his death certificate, it shows his parents as Robert Still and Margaret Sim. Thats my people!!
I did realise that most farmers were tenants, i would also like to find out who the main landownders were during the 1800s in the boyndie area. Where would i get that information?
Thanks so much again for all your help

Hi Mcduff, Sadly, there are no "Still". and only 1 or 2 for boyndie. The way it is set up.... is the place they live, not necessarily all they own. I am happy to send you all there is for Banff.. send me your email via PM. and I will send it to you. regards, kenjo

Hi Kenjo,
Thank you so very much for that information! It has explained to me why some of my people had the middle name Longmore. They mustve been tenants of Andrew Longmore at Rettie.
Again thanks, you've made my day!!
