Request 1861 & 1871 lookup for Henry GATER of Hulme,Lancashire. An E.Gater won 'Walking Prize' in September 1876 !! I possess the trophy and am trying to ascertain how this came into possession of my family who emigrated in 1877.

The only Henry Gater living in Lancashire in 1861 was b Middlesex 1793. There are none in Lancashire in 1871.
There are no Henry Gater's born Lancashire on either the 1861 or 1871 but there are quite a few born in Staffordshire

Hi Kimberley,
what age is the Henry Gater we are looking for? I can only see one born 1832 Manchester on the 1851 census (father William Gater, born Stratford c. 1798) - haven't found him on later ones yet. Is that the one you're after?
I can see Henry Wilfred Gater b. 1851 Chorlton on the bmds, but it looks as if he died four years later, still in Chorlton. Other than that as Carole says, Lancashire connections are not showing up as yet
My instinct is that 'E Gater' was the winner of the trophy. If they were the donor, I'd expect the cup to be inscribed with the names of subsequent winners, year after year?
Barbara

Gale in conjunction with the British Library. I can access this free as I have a Lancashire Library ticket. Couldn't find anything on a search for "Gater AND walking" in 1876, but lots of walking races were reported on as part of sporting events. Bit of a needle in a haystack really I'm afraid!
good luck Barbara

Me again, just noticed the exact date you have on the cup there, so I had another look in the papers for the week following September 14th. It seems an American called Edward Weston was a celeb of the time, and would undertake long-distance walking 'events' for example in Liverpool Mercury, Friday, September 22, 1876; Issue 4752, "Weston has completed his feat at Liverpool of walking 255 miles in 75 hours" Took place at Toxteth Park.
Seems he was part of a craze for long-distance walking races around this time, and there are mentions of walking races in local and school sporting events after this date, but with very few names given, and no Gaters
Still, intersting background info

The only conclusion I have is that George ROBERTS (my gt grandfather) treasured this cup/mug and brought it to Australia in 1877. He may have lived in Ardwick at that time although some of his family lived in Liverpool (West Derby) at 24 Dodge Street West Derby in 1881 census.
He allegedly worked with Manch Sheffield Linconshire Railway at about this time and I have him at 5 Railway View Ardwick for birth of his first 2 children (Thomas & Elizabeth) in 1872/73 and 60 Armitage St Ardwick in January 1876 at birth of 3rd child (George Edwin) A real puzzle !
