Right,

Im hoping there is an attachment to this of the bootmakers shop in Cuckfield high street. We now think that they ahd 2 shops, one with a bay fronted window and one with a flat window.

From memory, number 4 did look like the first of these photos.

I agree.  It is certainly one of the ones just there - if you have the photos with you it should be obvious.

Had another look today and it now seems very obvious.   Apart from anything else number 4 is called Cobblers!  (Can't think how I missed that!)
They are next door to each other.   Two arched doorways between them but both with rounded brickwork above the windows.  The right hand house has the round window and the left hand one has the bigger flat window.     With a bit of imagination the black marks in the brickwork could be what remains of the sign over the window.
Number 4 is a private house now and the other is an orthodentist.

HI all,

I went to Cuckfield yesterday and it is number 4 and 5 High Street that used to be the shop. It is disappointing that the paint is not readable anymore but funny that the house there is called cobblers!

We also found graves in the graveyard that relate to Charles and his wife.

I will come up again soon to visit the museum and see any info or pictures they have.

Thanks for all your help,

Kim

Hi,

I thought I would enlighten everyone to my success!!  I recently visited Cuckfield museum (suggested by Sillgen - thanks!) to see if they had any info on my ancesters.  It turns out that they had been trying to find a relative of Charles Newnham the bootmaker for some research they were doing themselves!  Anyway, I have made contact with them and they have given me some very useful information which will no doubt help me in my search!!

I am now researching the children of Charles, so if anyone knows any Newnham's that were born in Cuckfield (Crispin, Benjamin, Lilian, May, Hilda, Bill, Reginald, Dorothy) between 1892 and 1911 ish then please let me know!!

Many thanks for all your help!

Cuckfield Museum are holding a Family History Day on Saturday March 11th in the afternoon - SFHG will be there with their publications and various other local experts including Chris in 1066land.   Might be worth noting the date.

Hi Kim
Just to let you know that I have come across a document in the museum which is reminiscences of Cuckfield written by Lilian Newnham in 1980 and describing life between the wars.  It is several pages long and mentions all the family and her father and the shop.  You will find it fascinating.  If you let me have your address in a pm I will send you a copy.
We have another Family History Day coming up on March 8th if you are free then.
