I am afraid guys that this is not a society but one of the genealogy centres that are dotted around Ireland.  They do not allow access to Sligo records but will do a form of research on payment of a large fee.

I dont know why someone has called it a family history society.  There is a discussion about the centres on the 'Irish resources' page.

Hello Bills,

I agree with your comments. It looks as though the Sligo people have changed their title to "The County Sligo Heritage and Genealogy Centre." www.sligoroots.com/what.html

I'm interested in the following item on the Sligo Centre's site ... "We also have plans to become involved in Summer/Autumn Schools with a Genealogy theme if sufficient numbers express an interest. Apart from the genealogical, cultural and educational content of the School we hope to include social events such as golfing, fishing, walking, traditional Irish music and dancing."

The Summer / Autumn Schools with a genealogical theme may be OK but there are a large number of groups organizing the other activities mentioned on their list already. Maybe businesses that organise social events such as those that Sligo Heritage are planning to introduce should consider employing a few genealogy researchers and start competing with the Heritage Centres.

I wonder if some of the other Centres will be following the example of the Sligo Centre.
